#41 thoughts

hey everyone, im a relatively new dmb fan (just discovered them this summer...i know, im lame) and the song that made me fall in love with the band is #41...so being a guitarist, i naturally tried to learn that one first. now my question is:

i know on the intro, he plays the variations of am7, bm7, em7, and D. however, he uses these really odd stretches and such that, although not neccesarily difficult, im wondering if perhaps theyre a bit unneccesary. i tried it playing just regular first position chords, and although it doesnt sound <i>exactly</i> the same, the differences arent that obvious. just wondering what you guys thought of that...

not necessarily... just try different ways of playing the song, and don't be afraid to try those long stretches, just dont feel like you have to play it that way... and if you wanna avoid those long stretches, play the first three chords like you want to, but play the D like it says on the site, it will help the sound immensely

oh yeah....that reminds me...all the tabs say there is a hammer-on on the fourth fret for the g and (i think) d strings...but not only are they incredibly awkward to do, im not sure they sound right.

You can also change those intro chords so the stretch isn't so great. Like this:

53x5xx

75x7xx

x75x8x

x5403x

So you just take out the third note of each chord...and then you can practice the real stretches when you're ready.

dont get me wrong, i can hit the stretches, i was just wondering if perhaps they were unneccesarily difficult

oh i see. Well, it's just the way Dave plays em. If he finds a certain chord progression that he likes, he'll play that one.

Hey, before I learned #41 the correct way on this site, I found a really pretty intro (which I still play before the main intro, noodling the chords). They are as follows: 005533, -24232, 022030, and
-54030.

If you want to get the closest possible sound you can get to Dave then I'd play em the harder way.

But yea, you don't necessarily need to.. I'd play it Billy's way. It is alot easier, one string doesn't make a hell of alot of diff. Just whichever way you like to play it, you should play it.

Thats how I learned this song first, and I still use it during the instrumental...using every possible way I could do that one chord progression.

my cover I played used these chords and nobody said anything about the intro lacking sound, so whatever works

Some people try to play the songs exactly like Dave, which to me is dumb, because when Dave plays a cover, he always plays it a totally different way than the original.

I'm all for that too dude. If you can make your cover sound just as good as the original or better, like Dave does with his covers, then hell yea, more power to ya...but I really doubt thats the case

you might as well learn it right bro.

learn it right, then screw with it. the greatest geniuses out there learned what they needed to know, then made it entirely their own and messed with the foundation and made something even better.
