those of you who are self taught and do have natural talent im not knocking you! However, its a great idea to use up EVERY OUNCE of potential you have, because we all have the potential to be knowledgeable and successful.

I'm living proof. I know very little theory, I know the basics of keys, chords, and modes, but that's it. Yet, what's this? I can jam with just about anyone I've ever played with (unless they suck), and it usually sounds pretty damn good imho

definetly generalizing way too much. With the theory knowlage I have I can't jam well at all unless it's something I know. I can't be like "Oh, that's in the key of Bb? Lemme see what I can do" and play along with something that sounds good.. I just can't, and I know a decent amount of theory.
there are people in both worlds that can/can't do something that the people that either do or don't know theory can do. Such as some people can just pick up a guitar with no theory knowlage and just jam with someone. It's just due to knowlage of the instrument. But that's not to say theory isn't important, because it's the most important thing there is in music, imho.

The fact is that you can be a guitar player without knowing theory and just reading tab. You can be a piano player just by playing Bach fugues and reading everything. However, to call yourself a MUSICIAN, you need more than the mechanics and more than the emotion.
Knowing theory may not mean knowing exact progressions, figured bass and fugue form, but a knowledge of scales, keys, chord voicings and structures is required to play ANY style of music in an original way.
I think people can be wonderful players without theory. There are guys I know who dont know their asses from a V7 chord, but they can play licks like hell. These guys might be good guitarists, but I would never consider them rounded musicians.
To me, the guy who knows ZERO theory is like a painter who can only make replicas of other people's paintings. I can buy a copy of the painting just like I can simply by the original recording of the artist whose song you can jam on.
