I never heard that dave told it on story tellers. You can read it in Step Into the Light. It's all about that beach party they were having in south africa. Dave was also climbing a cliff with everyone . . . he slips and falls flat on his face in the sand, lol. It is believed that this is what the lyrics of Tripping Billies came from. Now, it also says there are 3 possible reasons for the name tripping billies.

I heard it was the "naked cop" reference. A Billie is what they call policemen in S. Africa & he was Tripping naked at the time. "Dragons were smoked.." is certainly a pot reference, "Bumblebees were stinging" sounds like a tripping reference to me.

For us living any other ways was nuts. with all the goodie-goodies working shitty jobs for bum pay checks, took the subway work and worried about their bills were dead. they were suckers, they had no balls. if we wanted something we just took it, and if anybody complained twice they got hit so hard believe me they never complained again
