Restringing Guitar

I'm restringing my guitar (Ibanez AEL20) and having some trouble. My low e peg will not stay in place if I put any sort of tension on the string. I have properly put the string/peg in place (while pulling up on the string, pushing the peg down) but once I start tensioning the string, the peg starts to slip. I'll try to get an image to make what I'm saying clearer but does anybody have any idea what I might be doing wrong or is something wrong w/my guitar or what...Thanks.

Common problem. What you did wrong was

you bought a blue ibanez

now that that's over, I had the same issue with one of my guitars, feed the E-string into the hole.
then puch the pin in after it.
dont hammer the pin
keep a lot of pressure with your thumb on the pin but also pull up on the E-string to build some tension. the circle at the end of the string will not stay at teh bottom o f the pin, it will catch half way up and it will kind of counter the tension.

yeah, that happens sometimes, just push it in real hard with your thumb then keep your thumb in place with pressure on it and tune the guitar up close to being in tune. then take your finger off, it should stay.

damn it i had this problem yesterday when i did my guitar....luckily it is a shitty yamaha so i could just beat the pin into it for it to stay....it was so frustrating though...

okay this is an easy fis. just leave the pin out about half an inch, then pull the string as hard as you can while holding the peg where it is, then slowly push it down. the peg is angled and the ball at the end of the string is what keeps the peg in when it gets on the angle. your string is too far down so its on the bottom of the peg, thus pulling it out

As opposed to bashing or pushing the pin as hard as you can, why not hold the pin in as you wind the string up. It's the tension that holds it in anyway.

ANd if all this doesn't work... Here's what you need to do:

Roll a little paper around the pin, then push it down with the string.
It'll hold.

Or if not, Change your pins... mine should be changed soon... gotta use longnoses to change strings sometimes.

I got it - thanks for the help, I was trying everything you guys were saying, holding it in while I was tensioning, etc. I guess it was just a matter of doing it one more time w/the "special touch," who knows.

And yes...my Ibanez is a piece of shit, but I still love it. I taught myself to play on it (well that and its predecessor which I got from Costco). So, you can say its my first real guitar.

Just bustin your chops a little, I actually dont find myself to be above any guitar. Hell, I got a Johnson acoustic I got for free and ai still play it every now and then.

actually, i think johnson is pretty good in the economy acoustic department

Anyway, if the peg doesn't stay in you've got some minor issues.

You might need to do some alterations.

Goto a shop or luthier and check it out. BTW, if you go past the 4th fret how is your action?

(its' 3 am, chemicals are runing through my blood stream)

Wrong. it's tapered.
