stupid report doesn't know wut their talkin about

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

stupid report doesn't know wut their talkin about

Post by Beauford33 »

This may be a little long but please bear with me. I need to know what you think.

So anywayz i was browsing through rolling stones magazine website and came across this outrageous review of "before these crowded streets". I hope that u'll agree with me in how i responded and any needs to coment are welcomed. Here it goes....

Rating:
Somewhat Disagreed with the RS Review

I totally agree that the DMB is one of the most talented bands in "popular music". But beeing popular doesnt mean you are the best of the best, as far as musicianship. Carter although a very good drummer is basicly a "dennis chambers/billy cobham" ripoff, both dennis and billy are better drummers. "carter even makes references to these 2 in his instructional video" As for daves guitar playing he is no guitar god but he writes some creative guitar riffs....the REAL guitar talent in that band is Tim Reynolds although not an official member he is the one playing all the fancy parts live, and live is where this band shines they put on a good show. you wont go wrong with this album it is very solid. I reccomend it

this is how i replied.....
I would like to start off by saying that this is complete BULL!!! This person obviously doesn't know anything about musicianship what-so-ever. If this person knew anything about the Dave Matthews Band and the musicians within they would recognize just how incredibly wrong they are:
1. Carter's influences stem way beyond Dennis Chambers and Billy Cohbam and you can hear it in style. If this person had watched the rest of the movie they would know that other major influences are Buddy Rich, Papa Joe Jones, Clyde Stubblefield, Steve Gadd, and Gene Kruppa. You need to realize that to be a successful drummer you need to have more than one favorite drummer to emmulate.
2. Dave himself, is one of the best guitarist in current pop culture music. His riffs are some of the most technically demanding chords out there. Dave is known for changing time in the middle of a song. Take "one sweet world" for example, and how off beat this song is. Dave may not be a supper guitarist but he is one of the most creative MUSICIANS.
3. This is the biggest problem i have with this post. Tim Reynolds may be a GREAT guitarist but he is not what makes this band really stand out. If you have ever been to a live show without Tim Reynolds than you would realize that the concert is still as good if not better. With Tim gone the band members have a even greater time to shine. Dave himself, even says that every member has the skill to a front man but he just happens to be the person who sings. I myself am a musician (drums and guitar) and I hear all the little things that make each song incredible. Leroi: in each song he displays his ability to play all kinds of reed instruments in a rock setting. Now tell me how many times you hear a incredible saxaphone solo in a prodominitably rock song and still make it fit? Try one in a million! Fonzie: is one cool cat.....Carter: comes from all influences, and somehow is able to incorporate them into all kinds of settings. #41 for example, starts out as a regular standard rock/funk beat, but than switches to a police style reggae beat and than mixes into a contemporary jazz with a driving force. In live shows he has some of the most amazing fills let it be on toms, cymbals, or on snare. I'm not just talkin about quickness and speed but rather the ability for it to fit into a standard time signiture. Carter is one of my favorite drummers and i try to emulate him. As i study his fills i realize how complex this music really is and i praise him for it. Boyd: what more is there to say but rather he one crazy violinest (but in the best sense of the word) Whenever given the chance he compleatly tears up the music and creates his own sound. Much like Leroi but maybe even to a higher extent, how often do you hear a violin in any setting other than classical or country? When asked earlier why he decided to finally join this band, he said that "how often do you get a chance to play violin in a rock setting and still have the chance to make it sound good?" Dave: once again i'll say, he is one, if not, the most creative musical mind in current pop culture. In this album dave puts it to the max and creates a unique and chart topping album which today stands with crash as the best DMB albums there is.
So when you say that Tim Reynolds carries the band.....Think again, and make sure u know what ur talkin about

comments are apreciated.

i agree with the fact that BTCS is the best dave matthews band album...

but what do you mean One Sweet World is offbeat? It stays in a steady 4/4 the whole time...

BTCS is by far the best Album. Think about it, the songs everyone want to hear, but never do(well until this tour) like Dreaming Tree, Halloween, Spoon, etc. Goes to show it is the Best :D

Whenever musicians try something new, critics never like it at first. BTCS was definitely something new. Even though it is a bit of a random mess, with the odd jams and all, the songs are timeless.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away
