One Quick Question

First of all, I just want to say, as cliche as it is, that I'm happy to be here. I first learned to play by studying Dave's technique and his songs (alot of it from this site), because as we all know, nobody plays like him.

Anyway, I hadn't played in about a year, for several reasons, so I've forgtten practically everything I've ever known. LOL. Thankfully, I just realized this site had a forum, so hopefully now I'll be able to get help and perhaps help others get a handle on Dave's.

That being said, I was wondering if anyone here had any tips for playing Dave songs with the slightly smaller than avergae hands I was cursed with. I occasionally have a hard time stretching and changing chords and quick (and correctly LOL).

well changing chords is more about speed than hand size- just practice going from different chord to different chord, first slow then work up more speed

as for having small hands, i'd say just keep on stretching, play stuff like the #41 intro, or satellite and just keep at it, you'll get there

small hands hasnt held people like tim reynolds back. you'll be fine just stretch em everyday.

With respect to playing guitar, whatever you can play slowly and accurately you will be able to play in tempo and "fast".

With practice nearly anything is possible.

Thanks for the tips everyone. Like I said, where I ahven't played in so long, I've forgotten almost everything I'd known, including all songs, which unfortunately were half Dave songs.

I'll just get my chord progression down and hopefully that will be my biggest hurdle, along with remembering how to tune outside of standard tuning. I can see another thread in the coming week or two regarding that. LOL. I honestly can't remember. Haha.

I find that even if you have small hands you can play all of dave's stuff, you just have top work on the positioning of your hand.
So like for #41 intro I angle my hand so that I am actually holding the notes down with the side of my fingers. After I played like that for a while I started to be able to stretch better and can almost play it with my hand normal.

exactly. just keep doing it. and this is why i think crash is one of the most important songs for a new guitar player to learn. it teaches you to stretch...and playing that song once through every day for like a week will stretch your hand like no other. you just keep doing it, and your hands will one day be able to do it.

Actually, it's funny that both of you mentioned playing with the sides and Crash, respectively, because that's how I try and play it. I noticed kanter doing it on the video, actually.

i have lanky some-what long fingers and I have trouble sometimes with stretching. I found stretching comes with time and practice, as already stated. And if your hands hurt from stretching, take a break. I like to submerge my hands in warm water, while thinking about orgasming into chosta's mom's clitorus. 2nd part is a must, or else it won't work.

Get yourself a capo and play songs higher up on the guitar where the frets are smaller and easier to reach. Slowly lower the capo as you get used to bigger stretches.
