Well I hate to bash Digidesign, they make a great poduct, but the Mbox is officially outdated and overpriced. I don't know how they've been selling any these days at $500.

To give you recommendations on other stuff I would need more info. What kind of computer do you have? What are you recording and how many simultaneous tracks you would need. Do you have a mic already? If so is it a decent one? A lot of that $500 is going into the Focusrite preamps but if you have a shitty mic they still won't make a difference. You can't polish a turd as they say.

You would probably be better off getting, say, a Mobilepre USB from M-Audio. It's $150 and although the preamps won't sound quite as good as the m-box, with the money you save you can buy a really nice mic which will make a much bigger difference.

If you really wan't digidesign for one reason or another, wait until they come out with a replacement for the Mbox. It's only a matter of time.

If you have Firewire, I'd strongly recommend going with the M-Audio Firewire Audiophile or the PreSonus Firebox. (M-Audio is made by the same company that makes the Mbox ;))
