Dave - 2 Guitars Discovery

Post by Ranting Thespian »

Ok, I just pulled out my old files of MTV's Ultrasound for BTCS. I see Dave playing his martin hd-28v, but then when Stefan and Dave are working on what would become an interlude jam. Stefan is playing his acoustic Guild (which he has had for a while), BUT Dave is playing a jumbo Gibson!

Next, I see what looked like for a second like his taylor 914ce (but it couldn't have been, since got that afterwards. Then, I notice that the headstock had barely any logo on it, and it was no Taylor. I couldn't quite read it, so I went looking in other videos. I looked at a video of Dave playing Spoon on Much Music, and it was that same guitar! My only guess, since I can't get a really clear look, but it looks like the first letter is an L, so I would guess it's a Larravie (spelling?). Anyone else have any more info on these 2 guitars?

I think Dave plays a Takamine on the Spoon Much Music video from Canada. Don't know which model. The writing on the headstock isn't clear but it looks similar to their label. Dave did play a Takamine in the Satellite video with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra so maybe he has/had another.

Personally, I like that Dave plays different guitars. Variety is the spice of life.

Dave does/did have a Lakewood. If you look at the issue of Acoustic Guitar that featured Dave and Tim...the cover photo as well as several of the photos inside show him with one.

I am quite sure that is the lakewood in the spoon video from much music. I don't have the video on my now, but I remember making a note of it when I saw it since I had not seem him play it before.

Lakewood M32 I believe. And I do think that is the guitar he's got on the back of the L@LC CD case.

Here's one on Amazon:

Even says "popularized by Dave Matthews"

I wouldn't go that far...

However, the picture on the sleeve of the L@LC case is actually not from the 1996 tour that L@LC was a part of. The one on the sleeve (With dave on a mini jumbo lakewood) is actually from the 1997 tour. I have seen actual photos from the 1996 tour (including a pair from L@LC, and it shows him exclusively on a cutaway guitar that does look like the taylor. I assume that it is another lakewood, but I am not positive.

Ok, I know it's not the Tak. The Tak he is seen in during the show with Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and as well as Yoshi's, is a dreadnaught Cutaway, and this is not any dreadnaught. Now, it can't be the lakewood from the back of the L@LC cd or in the pictures on the tablature book, because it's a smaller body and has a cutaway.

Now that I look again, it most likely is a Lakewood.

Anyone know about the jumbo Gibson?

i knew the gibson jumbo and lakewood.
gibson j-185 cause a deep bodied jumbo is good in the studio, and the lakewood just sounds pretty.
