Another Dave Chord Question

Post by Grandpagotgame »

Is Dave the first on to use most of his unique chords, or have othere guitarists used them before him? I'm talking about chords like
2X02,3X04,5X06,7X07,75X7,54X6,10X710, and there is such a long list of others. Is he the first to use them? If not it would make me feel ok about using them in my original songs

Im not sure if anyone else has or not but i would go ahead and use them. I use them in some of mine. Dave doesnt own the fretboard so you can play any of his chords just as long as the song you make up doesnt sound like any of his.

I know those chords are played in Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls, and i assume those chords, or variations of them, are used in a lot of songs. Do not feel bad about using them.

The interesting thing about those chords, to me, is Dave's frequent usage of them enables the creation and playing of LONG uninterrupted medly-style pieces (ie connecting Billies, Grey Street, and Lover Lay down).

About how many of his songs rely on those chords? It seems like almost half that I have seen.

those chords are only used in the standard tuned version of the song. but if u ever watch GGD play live ull notice that john has his guitar in a different tuning and does not use these chords.

Dave discovered them (not like anyone else didn't know about them, but this is how he discovered them) by watching other musicians play. He was trying to learn what they were doing, but the problem was that he didn't know that person was playing in a different tuning. So, trying to work out the finger style, Dave came to realize it wasn't inthe right tuning, but found some kewl chords.

I have seen many people use those types of chords sparingly, dave is one of the few to use them a lot.

Me, I use those types of chords all the time. I base one of my songs around the x7578x chord. I also have taken some of Dave's popular chords, and added to them. I like to play chords like this 3x04x3, it gives a new high pitch sound to it.

Well I was just wondering if it was Dave who invented those chords, or have other artists used them before him? He also might have come up with some funky chords by transcribing some piano music to the guitar.
