You can play them upright. Eric Clapton uses a dobro (in an open tuning) on the unplugged album. Check out Running on Faith, Walkin' Blues, Rollin & Tumblin on that album to get a feel for the sound.

I think Fender makes a steel guitar that is only a couple of hundred bucks, that might sound quite alike.

yeah...i talked to a guy the other day, who owns one, and he's going to sell it to me for $150, it's a lefty, too..which is a MAJOR shocker...with this job i now have, i'm going to do some pretty cool stuff with it.
