G C D, etc.
Of course you can write a folk song using any chords you like, many if not most folk songs are comprised of open chords.
its funny how fol music has really lots its true definition. it seems that folk now is just a guy with a guitar singing over simple chords.
i'll give somebody a cookie if they can tell me what folk music really is
Lol. What I am trying to say is that most folks songs are comprised of open chords and are strummed and/or finger picked. Folk music could be defined as folklore or traditional beliefs, myths, tales, and practices of a people, transmitted orally or in this case through song. Yet, can anyone truly define art? (Now we're getting deep)
Just as some chords are referred to as jazz chords, there are indeed chords known as folk chords and they most often are open chords using only the first four frets on the guitar.
~ And rain washed away all her tears and I smiled done away was the sum of all my fears ~

Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away
