Hmm, i thought it depended just on the brand of guitar (and thus what the design of their bridges are), and I had read somewhere that Martins = narrow, Taylors = wide. I should call samusic and find out for sure. Thanks.

yeah, call, I was told at one point but I forgot what it is for Martins and by now I'm pretty much anti-under saddle pickup...

I like the soundboard pickups, more natural

Thanks for your note. For any Martin, you need the narrow format
undersaddle. I'm not quite sure why you've gotten different answers---I've
never seen a Martin with a wide groove (although they may exist).

After reading this thread, poking about B-Band's Web site, and listening to the samples from http://www.dougyoungguitar.com/pickuptest.htm , I'm coming to the conclusion that the AST+A1 may be a good starting point for adding a pickup to my Martin DX1. So, this combo is about $90? I assume I could add a UST later if I decide to, correct? Also, if just doing the AST, installation seems pretty simple. Basically the only modification to the guitar is increasing the end pin hole size to 1/2" if needed, right? I'm basing this off of this page:

Gcom - Do you have any recordings you could post using the AST+A1 combo?

Final question - Can I expect good recordings if I simply plug this directly into my laptop's soundcard and record with Cool Edit Pro? I plan to add software compression and equalization using CEP; or is a hardware EQ/compressor abosolutely necessary?

Although this is technically correct, keep in mind that the A1 is a single-source preamp. To get the second source in your guitar, you'd need a different preamp like the A2, which is designed for two pickups. This adds an extra $90 onto the $30 you'd pay for the addition of the UST.

On elderly...about $20 or so...no time to check but about that

Yes, but the A1 is about $30 cheaper (if purchased with the AST combo pack) and the A2 about $10 cheaper at Shoreline (http://www.samusic.com)

just so everyone knows, the elderly instruments repair shop agree's that b-band is the best out there for acoustic pickups right now, and funny that every one I talked to said the taylor is about the same, but not worth it because of the guitar it's in...
