For Anyone who thinks Boyd is amazing...

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

WHOA... WHOA.
Lets not turn this into an episode of Bill Nye the Science guy.
If youve ever used any of these programs, youd know you can add any track you want to a song, and simply turn up or down the volume, fade in or out, Distort.. do anything you want to any particular track on the song you are making

So it is literally this simple: Play whatever you want through a mic attached to your Computer. Add whatever tracks you want (Stefan playing in the backround, Carter banging the drums, crowd noise,.. your dog barking.. whatever you want) to the same song. Then adjust the volumes of each track so that if you want it to sound that way, you can have some tracks playing louder, clearer, more or less distorted, etc, etc, etc until you have the sound you want. This can all be done in just a few minutes with these programs and takes little or no understanding of producing music.

It really is just that easy. And Boyd is good. No one will ever get me to believe that was him in that .MP3. So I guess I should probably just exit this discussion. I need more proof then some sound file called "Boyd is Crap" to convince me that was him.

smeagol, where are you going to find separate tracks of stefan, dave, leroy, and carter all playing the same song in the same exact tuning (this can be off slightly in live recordings) at the same tempo, running through the same changes and arrangement at the exact same time, with the exact same dynamics and phrasing, etc. ad infinitum??

if anyone will give me a clue as to how to post mp3's I'm more than willing to share, dmbfan. I'm not a whiz with the computer or anything, and I'm not going to pay anything to host my own site, but if there's an easy way for it to be done, I'm all for it. Or if you'd like, and you have an email server that can accept incoming messages that are fairly large, drop me an email at halarson@davidson.edu and I'd be glad to send you a few things. this doesn't need to get ugly.

umm, http://webdev.archive.org/audio/etreeli ... ews%20Band

go there, you can download a ton of shows for yoursefl...would you like me to post the whole song? download all those shows and you'll see, and sixstring, you're full of shit. this is the exact same thing that you're claiming to hear so don't even try to pull that trick.

furthermore!!! I was at the show!!! my ears were bleeding!!! every show I've been to in the last few years boyd has just made it a royal pain in the ass to listen to certain songs. his first note of captain literally sent me back into my seat it was so bad...

anyone who says that that's not boyd serioulsy has got issues. you're starstruck. I have so much stuff I could throw at you that sounds worse than this...man, you guys don't have a clue as to what you're talking about at all...these are audience recordings...people take their mics and stick them in front of the speaker stacks and record the shows...there are thousands of shows being circulated...no one adds or subtracts tracks...don't kid yourself for a second...why can't you just accept the fact that boyd basically sucks nowadays? does everything have to be looked at through rosy colored glasses???

Ok, I listened to the solo and didn't think it was all that bad. To make sure I wasn't crazy I pulled out Dancing Nancies from Red Rocks and 10/31/92. After listening to those and going back to this solo, I think I like it a bit better than the first time I listened to it.

It sounds like a lazier version of his Nancies solo with a bit of a twist thrown in. I don't think Boyd is trying to make a bunch of crap sound good, it's just a change from the usual. He gets my approval for trying something to switch it up a bit, makes things interesting. I don't care that there are better musicians than Boyd, he's an integral part of DMB and is good enough most of the time that I've heard him.

Now, this definately isn't one of his best solos but I've heard a lot more really great solos and everyone is going to have bad days especially when you're experimenting.

So, compared to his other nancies solos, it's below average. It probably wouldn't have stood out that much for me if I just casually came across it.

Wait a sec, I'm listening to the Pig intro now. Ok, that's a bit bad but forgiveable.

So I'm with Levi on this one. Those solos are fine and doesn't stray too far from the DMB sound which is the way I like it.

Now, if these days Boyd is consistently screwing up the verses/choruses where it can really mess up the song then I would be a bit alarmed. But I have yet to hear something like that.

haha, i like the jm reference there. seriously guys, boyd is not this amazing musician you all think he his. sure he's good, and adds a good dynamic to songs, but there are times when he is just flat out off key. after all, he is ONLY HUMAN. there are more times when he has good solos and sounds right on then when he is off, but it DOES HAPPEN. take him off the pedastal.

case in point: on the last stop in LiC, boyd was so off key they had to redo his violin part in the studio.

if you don't agree with this, i suggest you go to http://dmb.nntp69.us/ and check out a couple shows. on 12.13.00, boyd just ruins grey street. it's hard to hear on the audience copy, but if you can find the sbd copy, he makes it unbarable to listen to. also, on 4.8.02, he completely messes up the timing on warehouse (around 3 minutes in). just to name a few. i mean, dont get me wrong, i love boyd, but he isn't always the best.
