Singing Volume

When I sing and strum my guitar with a pick I can rarely hear my voice over my guitar. Is that normal, or do I need to get the volume of my voice up?Keep in mind that I have a plain acoustic guitar no amps, mics or anything. Is a mic required to sing over your guitar?

Try singing louder is the only advice I have. Maybe try it without a pick for a while so it's not such a big leap.

thats a good question man, i was wondering the same thing.. i noticed that my voice was soft when i would sing and play at the same time.. but i think singing louder is the best thing to do, when i sing all along the watch tower.. i notice i can hear my voice alot better

well i just notice that when I see people play acoustic and sing. they usually have the mic turned up to what seems louder than the guitar. I was watching my video of Dave solo at a record shop (1993) today, and I noticed that he is talking over the very first part of lie in our graves and I can hear him just fine. And I know a lot of you guys do open mic nights and stuff, so is the volume on the mic turned up more than the guitar volum or are they equal or what?

Great advice, and if you're not that great at guitar yet, it's hard to separate your hand from your mouth, so you're more focused on playing instead of singing. When you can nail a song, singing isn't hard cuz you don't think twice about it.

I am trying to learn to do that. I have no problem with playing and singing at the same time. I've played drums for four years so I have no problems when a bunch of stuff goes on at the same time. But are the voice mics turned up more than the guitar mics?

Most likely. But that shouldn't matter, if you're playing unplugged, you should sound louder than the guitar at the appropriate times.

Come on, really? I'm not saying I'm special but even if I sing quietly I can hear myself.

I thought your questions my be a trick question, just sing louder.

more than anything though too you've got to project. theater actors who don't have the advantage of a mic do this a lot. projection does not equal volume. your voice should take over your guitar yes, but also you need to be sure that's it's not just something that's loud, but that is clear and crisp so that the folks in the back can hear you. if you just sing loud they might not be able to understand. even with a mic you've got to do the same thing you could sing loud, but if you don't put power and "umph" behind what you are saying the actual words won't hit the people further away. i hope that's clear enough to understand, it may be a little jumbled. but volume is key yes, but so is projection. they live a lovely symbiotic relationship.

I wish I had this problem. I have to try to sing more quietly than my guitar so no one in my house can hear how bad I sing. Of course, I suck at guitar, too, but everyone knows that.
