"Ill Back You Up" ..Help

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

"Ill Back You Up" ..Help

Post by little ants734 »

hey all, i had a really quick question that has been bothering me for quite a while, on the ill back you up song it says, x0220x and then xx225x and it says to use the second finger on the 2's and the 4th on the 5 and in the song, it sounds like he holds it as a chord cause its done fast. I dont see how that is possible. The 3rd on the 4 is understandable.. can someone help, thanks
and all the little ants are marching..

Are you talking about in the intro? 'Cause I just use my index finger on the 2's and since it's NOT a chord, just pick the 2's then the 5 (fretted with the pinky) then the 4 (fretted with the ring). With your ring finger on the 4 and your pinky on (well, near, I guess, since it's not played at first) the 5 you'll be in position to make both the 4x24xx and 4x245x chords. Hope that helped... especially since that was my 100th post! Yay, me.

i still dont understand why kanter would put 2nd finger and put the 4th on the 5, its almost like you have to bar the 2's with your 2nd finger and move to the 5 with your 4 fast enough..i am just a little confused

also how are you supposed to bar the x0220x with the 2nd.. this song is so tough for me, if anyone has a video or an explanation that would be awesome, the only part i have problems with is the intro

Its a bit of a quick finger move, but you have to practice.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

Because the song does not have a drum backing it can be a little tricky, but listen to dave on RTT a couple of hundred times and you will hear the placement of the chords. Timing is actually not as crucial with this song as others because it is so soulful. You have to play it the way to feel.

Thats why it is so crucial to listen to it many times, so that you can guage where dave's and tim's respective parts go.
