I wish you hadn't stopped Pat, I really dig your stuff. I don't think that it's foolish to write your own music before you've learned every technique there is out there. But hey, that's just me.

Well not really stopped, but just kinda "resting." I just had no basis behind what I was playing. I want to full out create a song you know? I just don't think I have the theoretical knowledge to know what I'm really doing. I don't know, we'll see. I'm taking lessons now, so I should go back and try to apply that knowledge.

fatjack wrote:Okay, so I came back one day to read some posts, and all I see are threads about praisedave learning phunkdafied. In EACH one, he blatantly disregards good advice given to him by musicians who know what they are talking about (MWR for instance).

I do this not to gloat or to make you feel bad praisedave; I do this as one guitarist trying to help another. This took me less than an hour and a half to learn, and only two takes to record (two because my phone rang during the first one). And the recording may not be perfect, but that's because I'm not trying to be. I purposely split the song into two different tempos to show you that the song is actually played slower on the album than on the Larivee video. For fucks sake man, get the damn record (and maybe you'll start spelling the title correctly :P ).

Now, I did this not because I have some strange obsession with "pop/slap" or finger tapping (but I do agree that this is quite a fun song to play). The point I'm trying to make is that I was able to learn the song a little than you easier because of my experience. I guarantee you wouldn't have had to climb such a large mountain if you took the time to learn some damn technique.

I also did this to prove another point. This song isn't some sacred promised holy grail of guitar playing. There are NUMEROUS pieces out there that far surpass this in terms of technique and composition (one of them being King's own Knock On Wood). So, lets not all just bend over for Mr. King; every guitarist has the capability to play like this.

I would have liked to have done a video, but I got tired of my friend being a Nazi with his camera.

Take my advice or not praise, either way keep at it, because I know you are going to regardless.

P.S. Sorry the volume level is so low, but I didn't feel like fiddling with it.
ok... first of all its good to see you back man, seriously it is

now 2nd of all im sorry that i hd the name wrong, my bad. i wish i could get teh cd but im too young to have a credit card and my rents are online purchase phobic.

congratulations on learning the song so quickly. im very impressed. i dont see any reason for you to attack me personally though. i never did anything to you nor did i "blatantly disregards good advice given to him by musicians who know what they are talking about". i can only name one person that gave me advice other than "dont try and learn it, you're not good enough". read over the thread again. i just asked for help on learning slap/pop and tapping. ONE person gave me info that helped me. everybody else just told me to quit. so i taught my damn self. i taught myself the damn technique. nobody else would fuckin help. now im about a week or two away from bein able to play it fully, no thanks to anybody on this website. (except them thinking that i couldnt learn it fueled me!) nobody is bending over to mister king, i merely saw this as a cool guitar piece i thought would be fun to learn. plus its one of the only impressive instrumentals within my grasp. seeing as i cant sing, that was attractive to me. my hope os to move to more songs like this, like some stuff by andy mckee and then write my own stuff like this eventually.

thanks for postin the slower tempo to help me out, i like that tempo better actually.

edit: in all that i fergot to actually comment on your cover: well done. i feel like it gets sluggsh around the fast hammers in the slaps, but for the most part i was blown away. im gonna go work on speeding up my tapping section now :D
like i said, i wasn't trying to "attack" you, just help. i thought maybe hearing this from another person might help

and you DID disregard MWR's advice. he didn't simply say, "you suck, stop trying." he suggested that maybe you should wait and learn a lot more before you tackle something like this.

and its great that you are on your way to learning it fully, but it would still fail to impress me. i see this so much: a person with reasonable potential glazes over basic technique to try to learn some "impressive" song. so you might be able to play it? big deal. no professional musician would consider you as feasible jsut because you can play one "impressive" song. this is what i like to call "stairway to heaven syndrome." how many people do you know that get a guitar and the first thing they try to learn is stairway. they can struggle through it, and they may be able to impress their girlfriend or some boorish goob at a guitar store, but what else can they do? nothing.

a good guitarist is a well rounded one; one that is versatile and can adapt to any style. amongst musicians, that is more impressive than playing some something that is more of a "parlor trick" than actual skill.
i do see alot of people do that stairway to heaven thing. but i see it way more with good riddance, people get a guitar, learn that first and feel like they're the hottest thing since sliced bread.

it dissapoints me that you feel that this is a parlor trick. especially because the only time you hear me play guitar is when i post something on here. i am truly honored that you said i have reasonable potential. i realize that mwr told me to attack fingerpicking first, but i didnt, and still dont see tha advantage to learning that first. and i didnt, and im learning the song just fine. i mean i can fingerpick, im just not at his level.

more energy of mine than you can imagine goes towards making me a more versatile guitar player. everyday i practice playing with a pick, playing slide guitar (both held normally and in my lap), tapping, slapping, popping, and yes a bit of fingerpicking. im very dissapointed that you see me as a one trick pony and dont know how i can prove otherwise. so im just gonna practice and keep gettin better, whether you guys realize it or not.

and i completely agree with your last statement, but there are plenty of guitarists that have made it a long way just knowing one thing, or in the case of many punk bands these days... nothing :D

good to hear, sorry if i misjudged, but i got the impression from reading all your threads that you were ignoring everything else besides this particular song.
