What gauge strings to use?

the stoner at my local guitar shop told my mom that there was some new study linking using medium and up gauge strings and early carpal tunnel syndrome.

so she bought 2 mediums and one light. that guys is a dick but does the difference between 10's and 12's really make that big of a difference? I think not personally.
