How do you copyright your music?

This is the place to talk about guitar playing not done by Dave! Topics about techniques, styles, theory, and other guitarists go here.

Here is the easiest way to "copyright" a song.

1) Record the song
2) Put it on CD
3) Go to the post office
4) Mail that CD to yourself as certified mail making sure to put in the certified part what's inside
5) Keep the certified mail part and when you receive the CD...DO NOT OPEN IT.

Keep it closed until someone comes up w/ the hit song that you wrote, "I wanna be your resident"....and then they become president and you sue them

Edit: This only works if they come up w/ pretty much your exact song from a lyrical or musical standpoint...but it's still a way. Elliot(gcomm) was the one to first bring this up on the boards I believe...do a search see what he said about it

I thought that a few years ago that there was a law passed that any original work inherently holds a copywright. Maybe I'm mistaken.

That is correct. However, it sometimes can be hard to prove in a court of law if you have no way of showing that you created the content before a person that is infringing on your copyright. Spending 30 bucks to register it is cheap, in my opinion.

Yea if you say its copyrighted it is it just isnt provable (sp?). So the best way would be to mail it or pay to get it done.

But with paying can you register a whole cd at a time or just one song at a time.

The best way is to pay the government (ack!) to get it done. There are books out there, such as the Songwriters Market 2005 that detail how to do it. They give tips like copyrighting like 10 songs at once as a "collection" for one fee. You can then amend your collection to separate the songs or something like that. I'd go to your local Barnes and Nobles and check it out.

btw, did you guys know that the copyright lyrics to Halloween is just simply "love, love, love"

I wonder if you could really get away with that.
