power chords are dumb. their not major or minor and have 2** notes in them.. no room for variation. theyve got a root, its octave and one more note and thats poo. if your gonna do power chords you might as well extend them and do barre chords ..
EDIT: they do work well in songs that are strange like Minarets which is a harmonic minor.

So you hate songs like Layla and thing that Eric Clapton is "dumb"? I think power chords are useful as long as you don't rely on them too much.

i dont hate layla. i love it.. but its not ONLY power chords like half the shit out there in music. Eric Claptons solo's and stuff are awesome and make the song a classic.
I guess. ... i hate powerchords when they are the ONLY thing in a song like in good charlotte poo, and siimple plan poo..
sorry, I guess by "power chord" I meant barre chord, I certainly don't play mine with just two notes, I've always called that kinda chord shape a power chord, but I think they're great if they're used right, kinda for stong percussive strumming, say like on Halloween or Too Much
EDIT: and you can still write great songs just using power chords, just look at Greenday

its not the powerchords that makes them bad. its the poor rythms, crappy lyrics, and horrible progressions
well...each to their own, personally I think Dookie remains one of the most influential albums of the 90's, but that's me. However, my point is that nobody should say that a certain chord is "bad" because it depends entirely on how it is used.
