yamaha aw16G recorder?

I'm looking for a good recording setup. I kinda like the All-in-one multitrack recorders, because my computer is too slow. Anyone have experience with the yamaha aw16g?

i dont think ive ever seen that much $. but hey it looks pretty good to me. and at 1300 its hard to go wrong!

My roommate has that machine. I know he really likes it but he's going to sell it for a Digi002 system. One thing to take into consideration with these recorders is that editing on them isn't the easiest thing in the world to do.

How does he like the sound quality? I'm mainly just looking to get my main tracks(Guitar, voice, banjo) down on this machine, and then dump the tracks into a studio, and add some drums and edit stuff there.

And it only costs $950, not $1300. But $950 isn't exactly cheap either(hell my car only cost $800), But I am renting a room for all this recording for really really cheap, so it kinda evens out.

Although they told me the apartment was haunted....

Those yamahas are supposed to sound really good.

If you can afford the extra space/money I would add a nice mic pre. Those onbaord ones are ok but they don't compare to a good dedicated unit.
I'd almost say spend as little as possible on the recorder itself and put most of the money in the mic pre but there are a few problems with that. Generally the cheaper units have crappy A/D conversion and the user interface might be a little odd. Sound quality doesn't mean a thing if your constantly fighting the damn thing.

I'm actually saving money right now towards the AW16G. I've messed with it, and some others at a local music store. The AW16G is my favorite. The Boss ones are okay, but it seems like there is always some kind of effect on, reverb, compression, something... that cannot be turned off completely. The effects on the Boss are great, but I don't play with a ton of effects.

As I said, I've made up my mind and I'm getting the AW16G as soon as I save up the green.

I'm not with him right now, but I've heard quite a few tracks he's recorded with his bands and his friends and they've all sounded fantastic.

I think the Digi 002's preamps are made by Focusrite so it probably has the edge there. It's just a control surface though, meaning you would need a computer, DAT, something to record to. The Yamaha has 20G hard drive so it's ready to go out of the box. You probably knew that but I'm clarifying in case you didn't.
