Grey Street 5X06

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Grey Street 5X06

Post by crush40 »

Hey everyone...

On grey street, you've got 7x07, 3x04, 5x06, 2x02. Playing that 5x06 with an upstroke is the only way that I can seem to keep that right hand moving, cuz I know Dave's strummin away. Should it be an upstroke there? I tried following him while he played it in Detroit last night, and it seemed like it was an upstroke...then again...I've only been playing for a year...and I don't know much.

Bryan

oh yeah...and without a guitar in front of me I don't really know what chords I play...as in, I was too lazy to look em up on this site, and I figure you'd get what I was talking about...cuz you're all just that damn smart.

In my cover HERE, I hit the beginning of all the chords with downstrokes. Not sure if this is definitely how Dave does it, but it sounds right to me. Hope this helps.

I have more time to post now. Dave actually plays it like this:

Code: Select all

7x07 3x04 5x06 2x02 .... 3x04 5x06 2x02 3x04
  D D U D D U D U
Although I don't think Dave plays the open D, though. I believe he mutes it.
Peace,

Stunt

yeah that chord is an upstroke, but dont forget about all the mutes inbetween each chord. i highly doubt those are the one strums dave makes during that verse

E:-----------------------------------------------------------------
B:-----------------------------------------------------------------
G:-7-----------4-----6-----2-----------4-----6-----2-------4-------
D:-x-----------x-----x-----x-----------x-----x-----x-------x-------
A:-x-----------x-----x-----x-----------x-----x-----x-------x-------
E:-7-----------3-----5-----2-----------3-----5-----2-------3-------
   D-----u-d-u-D---d-U-----D-----u-d-u-D---d-U-----D---d-u-D---u-d-

lower case letters = mutes

those mutes are the only thing holding me back in greystreet now. i still can't get that D string to be quiet!!

billy, my eyes may deceive me, but that chord you're playing in your avatar looks like the first position of tripping billies....is that right?

As far as the strokes go, youre doing it right. I always play the d open, cause it sounds much fuller that way on a six string. You have to remember, dave usually plays this song on a 12er so he gets a lot more sound playing only two strings.
