So my picking really sucks...

This is the place to talk about guitar playing not done by Dave! Topics about techniques, styles, theory, and other guitarists go here.

Just do it.. a lot.. if you need to get better a strumming with a pick.. strum chords until the cows come home.. if you need to work on single note picking.. there are lots of variations you could make exercises to work through, but just to get going, just pick your way through scales.. maybe go through the circle of fourths or fifths while you are at it.. it'll help your picking-to-fretting hand coordination as well. You can do different picking patterns, but to start out simple just alternate up/down

Code: Select all

E-----------------------------------
B-----------------------------------
G-----------------------------------
D-------------2-3-5-3-2-------------
A-------1-3-5-----------5-3-1-------
E-1-3-5-----------------------5-3-1-
might not be the most entertaining things to do, but the fundamentals are key to speed-picking. When you get more comfortable picking, you could start trying to play through some solos maybe too.. definitly more entertaining

i worked on songs that were picked but you basically just fretted a chord instead of some chaotic arrangement of frets. playing these songs allows you to focus on the picking cuz you are basically just changing chords here and there w/ your fretting hand. that helped me over the hump w/ getting comfortable w/ hitting certain strings and what not. then you can try other tunes that move all over the place w/ the increased skill of hitting which ever string you want and just basically focus on fretting. i am not sure if any of this makes sense.

songs like that are freshman by verve pipe and be like that by 3 doors..
