sattelite (sp?) strumming question

i hear ya. but it sure would add a whole lot to each song's tab if there were some brief explanations for the tricky mutes and strum-patterns. to play DM well you ultimately have to study each song in detail, and this is exactly the kind of detail that helps people learn. i think it would add a lot of value to the site. yeah.

I have a quick question though...

When you say "equally timed downstrokes" or whatever for songs like the stone, i'm not quite getting how it works.

so you've got that basic rhythm that goes as follows (main part of the stone):

- - - --- - --

right? and you (or dave even) supposed to play even those little quick notes with "equally timed downstrokes"? First, i don't understand how you can play different length notes when your strokes are equally timed (but i'm probably just not understanding what you mean, so please explain), and secondly, he (or we) honestly choose to play those quick little notes and everything with all downstrokes, doesn't that seem like an insanely difficult and energy-expensing concept?

I'm sure it's not nearly as confounding as it seems to me, but i guess i just don't get it.

just play it the way its easiest to YOU...cuz everyone is different, and if the way ur playing doesnt exactly sound good. then try something else but keep doing whats easiest and sounds the best for u. cuz trying to play exactly like someone else is a little ridiculous but whatever works for u...stick with it

I honestly fully agree with all of you guys about personal choice and practice and yada yada...lol. I'm just trying to physically understand what some of these people are talking about, I just don't understand. Of course you need to do what feels right, but if it's also good to put to use any advice that will make you sound better and whatnot, but i just plain don't understand what they're talking about there.

Ok, maybe I should've explained myself a little better. This all started out with Satellite, but you also made a reference to The Stone. Here's how they differ.

When I say equally timed downstrokes, I mean the downstrokes are so rythmic they keep the beat of the song. Much like satellite, they are very steady notes(beats). I should've said I was emphasizing on the first 3 notes of the intro:

If you can hit those 3 notes with the same timing, you have the rythym to the song.

The next 5 notes is where I messed up:

They are no where near equally timed up/downstrokes. They have absolutely no correlation to Satellite. That's where practice and listening take over, the good ol' fashioned way.

k cool that makes a lot more sense. I didn't want to have to conclude that anybody here was off their nut, but i was getting close to it.

I tought myself how to play. So if I do practice I dont know different views on how to switch things up I'd practice the same thing over and over until it sounds right but if I do it the worng way like with the stone when I play it it sounds perfect until the last 3 notes. Basically I dont know any other techniques. I jsut started taking lessons after 8 months of playing and all I'm learning are how to read music and notes on the fret board. It seems a waste of my time because i'll leaern these things on my own after a while (except reading music).

thats what he was doing with me... so i quit

i really wanted to just learn theory
