Not so Original Butterfly

You guys know that song Butterfly...the one that was a big hit a little while ago.....THEY DID NOT COME UP W/ THAT RIFF!!!

I don't know if anyone else know this but I was just listening to a track from the Chilli Peppers "Mother's Milk", the track name is Pretty Little Ditty.

The last 5 seconds you get the riff I'm talking about.....CLEARLY NOT ORIGINAL! Wow, I'm stunned...not really that someone used other music for a popular song....I just didn't know that

Eh, it's common for musicians to copy each others riffs sometimes by accident. They either noodle around and happen to come up with the same riff, or they heard the artists song in the past and forgot about it but then they played it and thought they had created it themselves!

For instance, the guitar virtuoso Steve Vai wrote an entire piece called "Bangkok" while he was touring with David Lee Roth. He thought it was real good, and it is, but then he let other people listen and someone pointed out that he transcribed the entire showtune Bangkok without even realizing it!

He contacted the original composer and they permitted him to release the song anyhow, which is cool. Goes to show how well the human mind can remember tiny little things.

hahah, soo true. its funney how that was their only hit song too.. Its kinda the same when J-low ripped off that Beatnuts track 'watch out now'. except that was blatantly obvious.

Yeah...it happens all the time. George Harrison's first hit w/o the Beatles was a blatant rip off of some popular song by a group of women. He acknowledged it after he heard them next to each other....he didn't mean to, it just happened.

Like I said, it's not suprising that someone else used other people's music.....it's just that that's SO obvious that I'm really curious if Chilli Peppers got any credit for it. I mean it's there TO A NOTE

I was playing with my friends dad, who never heard DMB's music. I played songs like Gravedigger and So Damn Lucky and he played older songs, can't remember which, that sounded DAMN close that were written years ago...

Oh my god. I just actually listened to the thing and compared it to Crazy Town's Butterfly. That's ridiculous. They definetly ripped it off. It's one thing to have the same notes, but all the same effects and stuff make it definetly a rip-off. I think there's a one note difference. Crazy Town definetly pulled a Vanilla Ice on this one. "No, they're different. Our song goes dun dun dun dun dun dun dun DING." Haha. Thank goodness Crazy Town fell of the face of the earth.

Yup...I was looking around online and found this quote from someone:

"I just thought you might want to mention that the guitar, bass, and trumpet
loop played continuously throughout the song 'Butterfly' is actually just a
loop taken from the instrumental 'Pretty Little Ditty' arranged and
performed by the Red Hot Chili Peppers on their 1989 album 'Mother's Milk.'
The guys in Crazy Town aren't actually playing it in the recording."

When you're starting out, especially in the case of the Beatles, and you don't know what you're doing, the idea of borrowing, liberally from other people's music is really how you learn and create.

Nobody reinvents the wheel. Of course, blatant ripoffs are sad and hurt everyone.
