i use guitar rig.. its freakin incredible man, hundreds of possible effects..

you'll need a soundcard that supports ASIO to use it in real time. I just got an ASIO 2.0 soundcard and the latency is less that 7ms - undetectable delay by the human ear.... so fun to play with headphones on
anyhow hit me up on IM if you have any questions

Damn jared you beat me to it.
Its all about low latency. I use Linux, so I likely cant offer you a suggestion on software, but get a decent sound card.
If you use a SB Audigy or something, get the KX drivers instead of the Creative drivers. They are much lower latency, and give you a bunch of rad realtime features with the DSP.

another good card i've seen that supports ASIO 2.0 and is reasonably cheap is this guy:

both cards have lots of great options, you should really check them out.. having guitar rig + a low latency ASIO 2.0 sound card is hella fun. I've skipped so many classes playing on with that program
Locarius - thats awesome you use linux btw. you don't see many tech savvy kids like us here at the boards that often. I've seen a lot of VST effects for linux recently - like a DL4 pedal emulator. I couldn't find one for XP so i just went out and bought real thing.. its in the mail right now.. can't wait to play some howie day songs with that thing

Its nice having the extra functionality with Linux, but there are some drawbacks... like waiting for an application to be developed more, or waiting for a feature you would use a lot.
That's the nature of Open Source Software. If you need it, and its not out there... roll your own.
I'll likely be writing an iTunes or Foobar2000 clone after the christmas break. Rhythmbox is nice, but doesnt have gapless playback.

Thats the thing, the computer i built got XP on it, which sucks. Windows programs are so corrupted. Stupid Bill Gates with his money. It's hard for Linux and Apple to really get out and get the market shares.

Among my circle of friends (mostly nerds) Linux is picking up steam. It just takes that one moment where you are so sick of the crap windows dishes out that you are willing to put a bit of effort into trying something else.
I really like free everything. I have no pirated software on my stystem. Its all free to download and use. I like that.
http://www.gentoo.org is my OS of choice for now. Once you're off Windows you'll never look back.
Anyway, thats my evangilism for now.
