one trick i've found when trying to learn how to properly mute during songs like tripping billies and grey street is to play the song a half-step or full step up on the guitar but DONT USE A CAPO. since you aren't ever supposed to hit open strings in those songs, it should still sound right played up the neck a little bit.
this helped me alot cause you can play the 2xx2, 3xx4, 5xx6, and 7xx7 chords in both these songs while letting the D string ring and it will still sound good, even fuller if that is the sound you want. by moving it all up a couple frets and not using a capo or anything, you can really tell when you miss muting the string.
this of course won't work on songs where you are muting open strings, but it helped me a ton on billies. i'm still struggling with grey street. any advice or that one?
Good Practice for Muting
Re: Good Practice for Muting
Dunno. Just practice I guess. I sort of angle the finger fretting the low E string to mute the A string. I let D ring out.StickyMU wrote:i'm still struggling with grey street. any advice or that one?
that's what i do too. but i want to be able to mute the d as well and can't get my finger to lay flat enough without fretting the high e string. however, that can sound kinda cool if you can do it consistently. but, i want to get the D muted as well. i can do it in billies but the movement is so much quicker in the chrd changes on grey street. like you said, practice....

i use the finger for the E string to mute both the A and the D. I guess you just have to play around with your fingers.
