here and there i like to strap on my GEEtar and play some tunes (not for anyone but whatever). well playin certain dave, you have to have the guitar all high and dorky lookin to allow for certain fingerings. not really a question in here anywhere really. just do you guys play w/ the guitar strapped high and can you pull it off (appearance wise). cuz of my body shape (long and awkward) i do not. *sigh*......
oh well, its just my appearance. no biggy cuz its about the MUSIC. 8)
yeah i'm in a dave cover band, and i put the guitar really high...well conpared to the way most people play anyway. i have a bunch of friends who have a punk band, and they all make fun of me for having the guitar so high, cuz they have theirs all "homey-G" down by their ankles. but to play the dave stuff with the streaches like in #41, BOWA, Captain, etc. you need it up relatively high.

yes i agree with graves on this one... you just have to have the guitar high to play most dave songs... im sure with most chord progressions and *gasp* power chord progressions as found in punk music, you can manage to have it 'ghetto style low' quite easily

It just seems logical to me to place the guitar in the same alignment as it is when I am sitting down.. but that may be the years of sit-down playing plus equally as many years of jazz-based contrived chord shapes talking

i agree. it feels right but man, i look silly. maybe if i get a thinner bodied guitar too. i bet a chet would feel/look cooler way up there.
Technically (from everything i've read in the past at least), the guitar is supposed to hang at the same position while standing as while seated.
If you play dave music, you're probably a more talented guitarist than your *punker* friends, so naturally you'd want to exbhibit better playing form as well, correct?
Dave has commented many times on how he has his guitar up by his nipples when he plays

I played with my guitar way down for a while, but the brought it back up high. It does look kinda dorky, but I started playing a lot better after I did.
Anatomically, the best position for guitar is sitting down with the body of the guitar BETWEEN your knees, not resting on your right leg. (Classical) If you try it, you will find the tilt allows you much better clarity with your barres. I believe that strapping a guitar and standing up is supposed to imitate this position. Notice the tilt when you play it way up on your hooters.
I'm with you guys when I strap on. My wrist really gets sore from having it flexed if I sling the guitar low. You are supposed to keep your forarm and wrist straight (like you were about to punch someone in the chops) to avoid any long term damage. I can't do this while I play looking like a stud.
Oh well. The image of a dork suits me better.

I absolutely love this sarcasm. I'll add by saying I play it relatively high, practically like I am sitting down, aside from my friends who keep it at the "playing-guitar-is-about-looks--not-music" length. Haha, just kidding, but everyone else not playing this style does keep it relatively low.
I didn't have time to read all the responses, but Dave keeps the guitar up so high because not only is it easy to play his style, but he learned sitting down...supposedly when he went to play standing up, he ended up playing it where the guitar would be when he was sitting (up so high)...anywho, I used to play real high too...still do compared to anyone I know, but you need to keep it where it fits you best...and you need to get used to playing standing up if you ever want to play out witgh others...
i play mine high as hell when i play any music. i think those "punkers" look stupid as hell when they have their guitar so low. i can't play unless the waist (curved part) is right under my right nipple.
sometimes I get in front of my full body mirror with only my jockstrap on and play SMTS or WWYS...I raise my eyebrow and wiggle my legs like dave does....it works best when you have an erection first...try it and let me know what you think.
