My Dad Was Grinding at my Guitar.

Unread post by gumbomadness » Wed Dec 01, 2004 6:13 pm

So... i bought a CHEAPO korean ovation celebrity-deluxe imitation (I just call it my imitation-ovation) when i first started learning guitar... :?

http://ovationguitars.com/pics/models/CS257-8T_lg.jpg

it looks like that.. but inlays are different and the pre amp is cheapo as ass.

Any way, the thing suited me fine for a while, but the action was REALLY HIGH, finally i just said fuck it and put it in a closet and played my Washburn WE-30 (Telecaster style and pickups..)
Okay, moving on:

I took it out again and was telling my dad that i wanted to lower the action. He said we could take it somewhere this weekend. Now, he doesnt play guitar, but hes good with crafty work and such.. anyway..I had been mentioning wanting to buy a new Acoustic..my dad doesnt like the idea of money being used for stuff. :x

So i go upstairs, and a few minutes later i walk in the hallway and hear this HORRIBLE ShreakING GRINDING SOUND..

i run my ass downstairs.. and see my dad sanding down the ... whats it called, NUT? or Bridge? The white slanty thing that the strings rest on on the end of the body (opposite the headstock WAAY down).. with a crazy ass metal tool..

The strings were all amuck..
and i couldnt bear to watch.. so he told me to leave and come back in 10.

And so i did.
He put the strings back on.

I tuned it.

AND NOW IT PLAYS A DAMN LOT BETTER ... i think it sounds descent ...!
WOO!

Anyway..
this guitar isnt half as bad as i thought it was... now i was wondering..
what kind of pickups go in these things? Like, im thinking maybe i should swap out the cheap ones and put in better ones...
and um.. where can i get that done to this thing? I live in South Florida if anyone knows anything.

Ive been living under a rock learning jazz theory/improv/shit and i dont know squat about pickups or anyting..

so ya.
Help? :)

BTW- i dont wanna buy another guitar because my bro is getting married and my other bro went to jail for shit and came back and lawyers are expensive.. and this guitar is really pretty and people go OOoooo when they see it.. so i wanna soup it up.

well thats quite the story...

if your set on soopin up this one, then heres what you need. to know...

the pickup is either piezo or a micd setup... to find out which one plug ur guitar into the cpu hit record and just scream at it. if you can hear anything like your voice on the playback its micd.

i would suggest a fishman matrix pickup/preamp. then plug iit into an aura and even the crappiest guitar will sound like a gift from god. the matrix will run ya like 80 prolly and the aura is 300.

good luck

What I don't understand is that if he doesn't play guitar, how did he know how much to sand it down? Furthermore, how did he know how to put strings on it?!?!

lol my dad is an old british loon. he "knows" how to strum some chords.. and thats it. I did show him tho, that the strings were up this* much, and i pushed them down, and said, "they SHOULD be around like this" and ... ya..
I always asked him about how he put on strings.. he says its "common sense". he just did them like normal,
he didnt tune it tho, he cant do that.. i did that.
