I played ONE DM before and it sounded better than any D-15 I have heard, but that could just be luck. Never played a DX1

I'm going to agree with Billy about the HD-35. I was in the market for a high end guitar last year and really tore into the Martin vs. Taylor battle. In my own opinion, the Taylors, with some exceptions, just weren't worth the cash. It seemed to me that they were more of a trendy guitar and I really don't even like the sound Dave has pulled out with them. I feel like you're paying more for an oversized pick-up/pre-amp combo then the actualy guitar itself - those pre-amps are rediculously huge and are a blemish to body of the guitar. In all fairness, though, I was highly impressed with the Taylor Koa wood guitars.

Long story short, I fell in love with the Martins. After only hitting a few notes I was blown away by the HD-35 with it's 3-piece back design and incredible bass response. It is, without a doubt, worth the $2200 price tag. You don't need Martin to custom make your guitar if you want electronics. It's easy to get a Fishman thinline and have it installed for around $150 (parts and labor) and the impact to the body of the guitar is far less. If it helps, I had been in love with the HD-28 but the HD-35 just has a little more kick to it. If you want an example of how it sounds just listen to anything solo by Tim Reynolds who uses the similar D-35.

My vote is Martin - QUALITY! Good luck!
