Help with slide.

Unread post by i-am-me » Sun Nov 21, 2004 1:06 pm

I just bought one, and i was wondering what i could do with my old guitar if i wanted to to turn into a slideish type guitar. i know the action is usually bigger on them cause you're not supposed to touch the frets, but is there a way i could do this?

or should i just use this old guitar the way it is already?

You can buy a nut extender to fit over top your existing nut and that will raise the action: http://www.elderly.com/accessories/items/EN02.htm

Another slide tip: replace the high E and high B strings with thicker gauges(.14, .17), this will imrpove the tone greatly, as long as your guitar can take the added tension.

It can probaly take the higher tension, but to be safe just use a regular medium set and that should give you that thicker sound. I think the nut extender will work too, but if it dosn't you can make your own nut.

And yea I play slide(lap-style), and I love it. Slide gives you that instant soulful sound, and people will turn their heads and pay attention when you play slide. I dont know if you need a teacher, there are alot of videos out there. My favorite slider has a very helpful one:
