what does this mean?

I noticed on all of the tabs that below the 6th E string there are always these numbers. I was wondering what these meant. Are they for 7 string guitars or something? Everytime I am looking at tab on this site, those numbers always throw me off. Any help would be nice.

They correspond to the finger you should be fretting that note with. 1 = index finger, 2 = middle finger, 3 = ring finger, 4 = pinky.
