Hey..I haven't really posted here alot, but i read alot of the stuff on here all the time, and felt like posting today....I guess I just have a question...Why does an artist seem to have some in depth chord progressions to be considered a skilled artist...Don't get me wrong, its always a treat to here someone play guitar with an indepth progression, but is it necessary....I can definately say there are people that post on this site alone that have incredible ability...quite possibly better then Howies...but the best guitar skill, or the best voice isn't always needed to make it big..Some of the greatest never had "the voice" or the best skills but are considered "greats"...It all falls down to how the music makes the listener feel....Which I know you all know already....I guess he just spread his shit so far around that enough people just plainly enjoyed listening to it...just thought id add my 2 cents...
What did the five fingers say to the face...SLAP

I liked him until I saw him inconcert. I have two of his cd's so I decided to see a show. It was horrible. Playing was sloppy and singing was flat. I decided to see another of his shows. Once again I found the entire show to be sloppy. Anyone else have this experience? I cannot even listen to the cd's anymore because I was so dissappointed in his live sound.

i have a few songs live that i downloaded, and they were pretty good. that's weird though, cause if he got his start playing live, you would think he would at least be good at it.

I saw one show. He wasn't off exactly, just that band he has blew nuts, and I mean blew. Howie himself looked like he had just snorted a few lines, and it just got boring. The shitty, crowd-surfing fellow concertgoers blew it too.

So you can agree, but he can't disagree. What a delicious double-standard.

i wasn't agreeing with his statements about that particular concert. i was merely expressing that someone else finally realizes that maybe Howie isn't 100% all the time.

im still open to the possibility that he does well for the most part.

But what I can't figure out is, his chord progressions on his originals are pretty standard. His lyrics are nothing to write home about. His voice, while awesome, isn't unique really. And the only time I've ever heard him do anything really remarkable w/ his guitar was on a few of his covers. This all to say I've heard better vocals (Miguel), better songwriting (Tico), and better guitar work (Josh) on this site alone.

So I guess I just don't understand how some people get record deals while others are sitting at home w/ more skill, learning the first guy's songs.
The music industry has a way of trying to make certain artists seem "bigger" than they really are. Howie Day has fans, a lot in fact, but he's not in a position to play stadiums and I'd bet that most people in the United States don't even know who he is.

His claim to fame is his chameleon like voice and use of effects pedals for a one man show. Now, he's a got a band and major label backing.

At least he's got good taste in music.
