New Song "A Step Forward"

I recorded this today in the studio. You might have heard it already, when I posted an earlier, rougher version of the track in my other thread.

It's still a draft though. I think I'm going to add a subtle track in there for a little bit. The percussion that comes in the end is a bit shaky coming in, but fits nicely. (The guy's 9.)

Oh, and I decided to go with the normal ending.

that was absolutely awesome

i wouldn't even know where to critique because it was just great...i loved when it changed pace right around 2:10...that just came in perfectly....awesome job pat

Thanks man. I was contempating not even using that part, but I felt that it did bring a nice change of pace, and kinda set up the last parts nicely. Edit: Nevermind, I thought you were talking about a different part.

Really beautiful Pat. Your songs are gaining more and more focus which imo is crucial for instrumentals.
My first qualm is a technical one. The mystique of solo fingerstyle is that your playing the melody and the bass at the same time. This recording lacked all of that low end so we were robbed of hearing everything as it was intended. Just a drawn out way of saying "more bass please".
This is personal preference but I'm not sure if I appreciate the multiple guitar parts. Again, the essence of solo guitar is to be a one man band and that gets clouded when you start layering other tracks on top. I think overdubbs of other instruments is fine but that guitar should speak for itself.
My last piece of advice is to mix up the melody. You don't have to reinvent it just give it some new life as the song progresses. It could be as simple as playing the same melody in a higher or lower register. Even just a slight variation can be really refreshing.

Really cool song you got going. I'm looking forward to the finished product if ther was such a thing.

i was just listening to this and my roommate asked me who it was so he could get it himself. he asked if it was leo kottke at first but he thinks anything fingerstyle is leo.
anyways i heard another version before i heard this one and i like this one better with the extra instruments. i think the guitar speaks for itself fine on the rest of the track so the other instruments coming in at the end just kind of brings it home. i totally agree about the growing focus in your work though. i think i already told you that but just thought i'd reiterate.

First of all, I never really thought about the bass in this song. I'll definitely take that into consideration.

To be honest, I don't like the second guitar parts either. They most definately wont be there in the final recording. (There's only two second guitar tracks - one at the first change, and one at the last repeat off the main riff...oh wait three, there's a subtle one at the end as well. Whatever, you get the point.)

I also agree about the melody. I definitely feel like I'm stretching it by playing that riff so much during the song. I'm still working on arranging more parts into the piece, so I can hopefully solve this issue.

I don't believe I'll be adding words to this one.

Hopefully I can get a more complete, better sounding version of this recorded in the near future.

Speen - I just tried downloading it, and it worked fine. I'm not sure what the problem is. Have you tried right clicking, save as?
