Question from a newbie

hey guys I have a yamaha from like 1970 that i borrowed because of a strict budget. I just put elixer strings on it and I like the snappiness or twang that you get from them but they dont pop quite like dave's do I love the way his strings sound and i was wondering if there was some way to get closer to that sound. I'm sure it would be outrageously expensive to duplicate it but I want to get as close as I can. Any suggestions???

The type of guitar you have wont help near as much as just plain old practice. It takes a whil'e to get dave's style down, and the sound he gets comes from style, more or less, not equipment. (Dave played bottom line yamahas and ovations in 1992-93, and they still had his "pop.")

As a side note, I find a lot of people are used to how his guitar sounds plugged in...if you just plug in to an amp, you'll notice a somewhat closer sound just from that.

Well, if you wanna use the strings Dave uses, string it with D'Addario EXP16's.

Just lights. The Exp15's are ultra lights

thanx guys I am totally untalented when it comes to guitar. So I have to rely on more motivating factors to remove the frustrations. If I can find a sound that I like from a string then I think I can have a touch more motivation. Its like when the first time you get that song to sound remotely close to what it is supposed to sound like after blurting a bunch of ugly sounds for weeks. It feels good It gives me chills when I finnally can do something that someone as talented as Dave can do.

so so true. i've been wanting to give this advice on all those "how to sound like dave" questions. you'll notice that many guitarists are easier to mimic when plugged in. especially if you listen to a lot of live recordings. i love the sound of an accoustic plugged in. it is just such a weird mixture of natural and electric sound.
