Dave's Englemann spruce tops

Post by erech »

Im just curious as to why Dave's taylor 914s look like the spruce top is ivory white, and his martin dm3md looks very yellowish/orangish. Is this just lighting or is there definately different colors? Isn't the wood the same?

well, all Taylor 914 have a white top. and the martin has a white top, UNDER the finishing. they stained it a little yellow. youll rarely find a martin with no coloring on the top.

As the wood and finish age it gets more yellow. Most vintage guitars with spruce tops will have a pretty distinct yellow color. I think Martins finish accelerates the process more than other companys, not sure though.

Such as this 1940 D-18:

Compared to a brand new Taylor 810.

Wouldn't daves dm3md have a white'ish tint to it since it was bran spankin' new?

You can give it the yellowing effect with the finish.

Some guitars have aging toners applied to them at the factory to make them look older. I personally don't really like it, my 89 Martin M-36 has the toner, and it's almost orangy from the toner and the fact that its 15 years old and played to death. But its played to death because its muh favorite soundin and playin!

the thing i love about daves 914, atleast the one he played at CP, is how distinct the two peices of wood are. The top piece (if he were holding it) is darking than the bottom piece. I think its a cool contrast.

No bro, it's definetly not darker..same peice of wood, two different sides of it. It's what cabinet makers do. The rip it in two and put them side by side. The color difference you see is lighting from the way he holds it

sorry if that seemed..attacking..but i just didn't have a fun day..needed to release some anger

really?? i've always thought the same thing, i knew that it is the piece of wood, but i've always thought that one side was darker than the other.
