Newbie Help Please

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Newbie Help Please

Post by rmuller612 »

I started playing my guitar a few months ago. I have the general chords down and can play them with some ease. I have been a huge Dave fan for years now. I was wondering if someone could please point me to a Dave song that is somewhat easy to play. I know that his style is amazing and nothing is truely "easy"......well you get the point.

Any help would be great.

Peace,
Robb

Grey Street is pretty easy check out the tabs on here. Lover Lay Down is fairly easy. It seems that a lot of people learn Crash into Me first. It's easy in the sense that there isn't much fret movement but it does involve a stretch that is difficult for a lot of beginnners. Unfortunately a lot of Dave songs, can be difficult in their respective ways. Another non-Dave Matthews song that is really easy is Wish you where here by Pink Floyd. Good luck!

If you're going to do grey street, do it right, and the chorus is a bitch if your just starting.

I would like to add that a 'professional like Matthews even STILL finds it difficult to do this stretch for the amount of time that the song lasts.

Example(s)

Watch him after he plays Crash...he always shakes his left hand out.

Also, there is an alternate way he compensates for playing the way its supposed to be played. (Just because the stretch takes a toll on his left hand.)

"Christmas Song" is the easiest Dave tune that I know of... Easy chords, simple blues strum pattern on the chorus, easy to sing to.

KCW wrote "Stay or Leave", but I disagree... Halfway through, the time signature completely changes, and some of those chords on the end would be tough for a beginner. BUT it is the hard stuff that makes you a better player!! So rather than learning the easy learn something hard. If it takes you two weeks to even sound like it, then after two weeks there will be a bunch of songs that will "at that point" come easy to you...

Learn something easy to get some basic chords and comfort level, then CHALLENGE yourself!! You be glad you did

Dude, learn Trippin' Billies, Warehouse, hard shit. It's what I did and now easy stuff comes well... easy. I'm glad I made myself learn the hard way cuz now I feel more comfortable learning easy songs.

I disagree with learning songs like those at first. Always reach higher than your level but not that much higher. If you take a jump that big your going to get frustrated with it. But he has a good idea for the most part. Play stuff that you arent good enough to do but is still realistic for you to learn at your level and you will get better faster.
