Gig Last Night

Post by GuitarGuy305 »

So I had a pretty good gig last night. I had emailed this woman that does the booking for this coffee shop near my house on Sunday night, about possibly playing there in the not too distant future. She emailed me back saying that they were booked up until March 2005, but they would love to hear me on tape or CD so that we could discuss a future gig.

So I thought "Okay. I have plenty of time to get something decent together to send to her." Well, then I get a call at work Monday afternoon, saying a guy had canceled for that Friday, and would I like to fill in? I accepted, and then had 4 days to plan a 3 hour set.

So anyway, here's the set I played:

SET I

Gravedigger^
L’s Song(David Gray Cover)
Home To You*
Rhyme & Reason^
A New Day*
Say Hello, Wave Goodbye(David Gray Cover)
Green Eyes(Coldplay Cover)
When The World Ends^
Here We Are*
Grace Is Gone^

SET II

Nothing Else Matters(Metallica Cover)
I Will Always*
Big Eyed Fish^(867-5309 outro)
Angel From Montgomery(John Prine Cover)
Blue Water Baboon Farm^-->Break Away*
The Maker(Daniel Lanois Cover)
Hello In There(John Prine Cover)
What Would You Say^
Let Fate Decide*

SET III

Seek Up^
The Way*
The Stone^
Reasons*
Christmas Song^
Times Like These(Foo Fighter's Cover)
Back Then*
Tripping Billies^
Dead Flowers(Rolling Stones Cover)

^ Dave Matthews cover
* Original Song

Needless to say, there were a lot of covers played. But crowds around here don't take well to stuff they have never heard. My covers are pretty obscure though, I mean, casual Dave Matthews fans don't know the Blue Baboon Farm, and probably just thought that was part of my song, Break Away.

Good gig though, and a lot of people from work came down to check it out. I was happy with the set, especially since I had 4 days to plan it and practice it. I pulled a few covers I haven't done in a while out of my ass there. But I'm sore today from lugging my PA equipment back and forth.

Anyone else had any good gigs lately?

I'd like to hear this 867-5309 outro to BEF. Anyone way you could post a clip?

Wow thats quite a setlist to pull off on such short notice. Well done.

My own personal opinion is that it's a little heavy on Dave but overall it looks like you had a pretty good mixture of covers and originals.

Not a bad set. I applaud you at not doing pretty much all dmb, but for quite variety. Also, I LOVE to play Blue Water before suicide songs that I have written (or others).

Yeah, going into it I thought it was heavy on Dave too, but there wasn't much I could do about it. I had to fill 3 hours, and I know that a lot of people know Dave's stuff. And DMB is about the least obscure cover stuff I do.

I don't have any kind of recording capability, or I would post a clip of that BEF outro. It's just something a buddy and I made up one day while jamming on that song. The chords in the chorus/outro Em->C->G->Bm are perfect to sing "867-530 niiieeeiiiieeen" over. It's just a silly thing that we/I do sometimes at open mics and gigs when the mood strikes.

The 8-6 is sung over the Em, then 7-5 over the C, 3-0 over the G, and then the niiieeeiiiieeen over the Bm. If I ever save up enough money to get this thing:

Then I'll have no problems posting clips or whole songs of stuff I do.

When I had a gig at a bar/tavern in 2002, I would go over 2 hours with my set. It was fun. I never got tired, not one bit.

It's just something a friend and I made up while jamming on BEF one day. Just singing the chorus from the 80's song 867-5309 over the chorus chords to BEF. Just a silly thing that gets a laugh from the crowd. Dave himself has never done it.
