Does dave know theory?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

The Chet was kind of an electric. but that baritone electric on Everyday was the first time he recorded with an electric guitar.

wait all the songs that sound electric on crash are tim? like tim is playing drive in drive out and too much?

my opions change i think he knows a good amount. he talks about playing nineths like piano players and how different keys are forgiving.
Please help me...there are worshipers on my ass and chest.

Dave and Tim are playing on all of the songs. #41, Tim is playing the most noticible riff (even though I think its Dave) and "Dave" is playing the background guitar. For those songs, Dave is clearly playing. He just has an effect on the guitar. Probably some Drive.

As far as theory goes, you can pretty much be advanced in it without knowing the official points and terms..in a jam he probably just has worked out his own ideas and techniques. It seems the guys who play some of the best dont know what it technically is they are doing but you acquire a general knowledge for what fits. Despite that I'm sure he still has a good education of theory anyway

I think you can write good stuff that appeals to people who are very theory saavy, without knowing much yourself.

When I was like 16 or 17 I brought my guitar in to a writing class in high school as part of this project. I played a few originals for the class. This one kid that was into all kinds of things music at school, and was a killer sax player in the jazz band came up to me after class saying all this shit I had no idea what he meant. He said something like "I love how you would go from major to minor, etc.." and threw in so many other musical terms that I had no clue what he was talking about. He also said "I assume you've worked a lot with the wheel/circle of fifths?" I had no clue what that meant then.

Now that I'm getting more versed in scales and modes and theory in general, and I actually know what the circle of fifths is, I look back on that and understand more what he was talking about.

So basically, if you play what sounds good, you most likely incorporate a lot of theory even if you don't know Dorian from Phrygian.

i'm sure he knows a bit of theory to play alot of the stuff he plays....but i have a feeling he started out like most of us

no i dont think he knows that much because he writes alot of his music with the same type of chord progressions

i think tim wrote all those tricky ass riffs (R&R, billies, WWYS, etc) and sold them to dave... there i said it...

Ha, I think dave knows some theory. How else could he make such beatiful music? Think about how different all of his songs are. I wonder how much of the music he comes up with. I'm just curious if maybe like Leroi or somebody maybe came up with the beat for Last Stop or something like that.

Most are written by him but some others have helped. If you go to the song list thing on antsmarching.org it has a lot listed with credit given to writers.

I think he knows some....but if you think about the music he plays, he basically has been able to use the same kind of progressions and such and switch it up to make different songs.

A lot of songs have the same fingerings in parts. Grey Street, Too Much, LIOG jam, Tripping Billies, Granny are close....etc.
