Does dave know theory?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

He has to know a bit by this point in his career. I imagine he uses his ears most of the time though. I think most of his knowledge is geared toward rhythm as opposed to coplex chords and progressions.

I think Dave knows more than he leads us to believe. Maybe at first he just kinda winged it, but I don't think you could make up something like Rhyme and Reason or Billies without knowing a little theory and scales.

I think he knows quite a bit. Even as the scale in Minerates as a example of his theory knowledge. Even in his earlier songs like "what would you say" its pretty evident..

By this point, he's been playing the guitar for 20+ years, with a background in piano as well. He knows a lot more than you think he does.

he knows allot, remember, one reason dave says hes not a good guitarist a that he doesnt know theory, is 1.) hes very humble 2.) his best friend, and who he used to jam with friend was tim reynolds, who knows theory in and out...

i have quotes if dave saying "when i first heard tim it was like the first time i had said 'fuck i suck next to this guy" its like me, i know some theory, im not a bad guitarist but next to daniel, i dont know much theory at all, and im not great.

Dave, I think could care less about theory, he's also a lyricist. He makes music that goes well with lyrics, thats all. I'm sure he knows some theory if you look at some of the riffs he writes, but I think he just likes to play and sing, not dwelve deep into the mystery that is a guitar.

other way around. He says that he does the lyrics afterward. Most songs are product of a jam the band made up.

correct. I really think Dave knows quite a bit of theory. He's definetly no Timmy, but I just don't think you can put together those progressions and scales so successfully without at least a pretty good foundation of theory.

Dave's progressions and scales are simple. A vast majority of it is straight major/minor and he rarely adds any sort of real tension. Doesn't mean he's any less of a musician but his music is simple.
I do think he downplays how much he knows though.
