playing guitar for about 8 months

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Posts like this aren't needed on these boards. I would delete it but I'm going to leave it just as an example to other people. If you don't think he can play them, that's fine. You saying stuff like that isn't going to make anything different. Let's keep it positive here....peace

I've been playing since last july and can play a handful of Dave songs, none of which I can play and sing the whole way through. I think your cheating yourself out if your just learning Dave songs cause he has a different style than many guitarists. I try to get out and learn other artists that I like to get a more rounded style.

I think many people can simply play some dave tunes, but to sing and play is where its at in my opinion. Lata

it's good if you're happy with it. that's all that matters.

i've been playing about 8 months too, and i noticed yesterday that i am about done learning the DMB studio songs. here's what i know so far... all of uttad, btcs except crush, busted stuff except grace is gone, and i'm missing a few off crash...r2t except seek up, and hah i almost forgot every day, which i know about half of.

Theres a whole lot of muscle memory involved in playing the "right" way. There is also a subtlety that comes with experiance and I doubt you can attain that in 8 months. It's easy to impress yourself when your just starting out and that can be a bit of a booby-trap because you can get complacent. It's important if you want to progress to really take a look at your playing and to never be satisfied. Dave's songs are not particularly hard to play but it takes time to get the rhythm right. Sorry if I'm being sceptical and feel free to prove me wrong and post something in the recording/critiqing section. Finally to answer your question: if you can play them at the level I'm talking about you should be damn proud.

Some real good points here, I can play a lot of his songs, some very well and others I used to think I played very well. With Dave songs you can think youve got it down perfect and you are satisfied with your playing then someone like jason, fire, and others I cant think of (sorry you know who you are) post a version of it or you listen to a dave solo or d&t show and suddenly realize you dont have the song down exactly. Your missing little subtelties (sp?) that really make the song and you gotta learn it over again. Others who dont play the guitar may be impressed or you may not have had the realization yet and you think youve got it down. Of course you may just be a real quick learner and may have mastered them all but who knows, post a few songs and we'll see.

yeah, by "here's what i know" i meant songs i know by memory that i can play through in tempo without screwing up. they sound pretty close to the songs, but by no means perfect of course. and i will never be satisfied because i live with 2 guitar players, one who is a song writing genius, and the other who has been playing for 11 years and can tear apart any song by anyone he's ever tried. i have a lot to live up to.

I wish I had some housemates, or even some people in my town that played guitar (dave esp.). I wasnt really referring to you in the above post though, more so to the guy who claims he can play them gooood after 8 months.

You're all better than I.

I do admit that I am totally anal about learning a song though. If its not note for note, I don't consider myself to have learned it.

yea i'm in the same boat as bfcfp... been playing since thanksgiving so thats... 6 months and i can play, in tempo and without messing up, about 30 dave songs- most of these are decent but are by no means good... i would say that about 7 or 8 of them i have sounding very solid, still not great but definitely good.

I started with almost all dave, mainly because i like it, and its what i was happiest playing... now that im used to playing, ive learned a lot and gained decent ability, and im learning more about theory... The longer i play the faster i learn new songs and thats great because im starting to get sick of ONLY dave lol...

Hehe while i have to agree with you that it is cool , i would suggest you tryed alot of other music to learn other styles and such .... Playing Dave songs only , will not really make you advance that much in music .. Sure he has some nice songs , but they are not everything

Just a suggestion :)
