Vocals, yes.
However he is a much superior guitarist.

i can yall just not talk bad about othe guitar player/singers/songwriters anymore please.yes some people ain't good to other peoples ears, and you or anyone has a right to voice their opinion about them but not beat it to death every couple days. if someone would ask dave about his style and how he came up with it he would probley name off 5 or 10 names of people or bands that have helped him so why can't john do the same? or anyone else for that matter.

thanks dustin
P.S i'm not trying make you mad or anyone else mad just voicing my opinion on the constant posts on this such topic

yeah it is really getting rediculous people talking about the same thing over and over again...complaints about warehouse, dave's guitars, how to play #41, and people "ripping off" dave. if you ever want to talk about something....do a search

Yup..you should just type it in as a search and find the thousand times this has been talked about. I agree with QuatroDore vocals...maybe...actually playing the guitar. If John Mayer plays an F and dave plays an F chances are its bound to sound the same. You just cant go and create new chords or anything that is totally off the wall. Now I definatly am not a music major or anything or know music theory...but something tells me that most songs contain alot of the same chords. So until JM starts playing stone and and replaces one word and calls it his..im not convinced.

John Mayer sounds nothing like dave. Dave has a strong delivery while mayer sounds extremely breathy. The only way I would think Mayer sounds like Dave is if Mayer was an extreme asmatic.

yeah john does have a raspy type voice, but can hit high notes.

i really do enjoy most of John's stuff...

here is my professional opinion (yeah right) when comparing the two:

Vocals: Dave has a smoother voice and hits higher notes. His melody of voice in his songs are much better and more preffered (by me).

Guitar: John is definitely more skilled in my opinion. I am basing this on his fingerpicking skills, vast chord knowledge and rythmatic style. i guess going to Berklee does pay off. But i think dave has more memorable type guitar riffs, and fit the vocals better than John's do with his guitar playing.

Lyrics: Dave is just better here, no real explanation needed

i love all of dave's music and a lot of john's music, but that is just me cause i just love acoustic music so much

Yeah i saw an interview where he said he was at berkely for a couple years ?? ..

Anyways John's chord use are sometimes difficult to get used to cause he plays most of the chords using his thumb on the E string , which makes him able to make alot more combinations ..

Personally i love John's music , and i don't think you can really compare John and Dave and call it ripoffs in any way , the thing that might be catching peoples ears is the jazzy sound that they both have included in their music ....

Just my opinion

Who gives a shit? I just recently started listening to Mayer and I gotta say I'm very impressed with the guy. Yeah, of course he sounds a ton like Dave and his chords, fingerings, etc are remarkably similar - as in, they are the exact same style - but so what. Atleast he goes out of his way to admit that Dave has had a huge influence on him. For what it's worth, I think "Why Georgia" is an awesome tune, but can't stand "Wonderland".

What i wanted to say was that you should listen to " Love Song For No One " .. " Sucker " .. " Man On The Side " .. " Comfortable " just to name a few :)

about john's chord fingerings...that's just amazing. i know that i have bigger hands than most people and I can just BARELY reach the notes for "Neon." i havent decided whether to keep the thumb style or just use the four regular fingers. he has even grown used to using the thumb to fret the E string on a regular f--king G chord!
