Preamp and built in tuner ?'s

Post by sbhanot »

What is a "preamp?" This guitar I'm getting has a TK4N Preamp, and i'm not quite sure what thet means. It also has a "built in chromatic tuner" .... how does that work? Its the Takamine EG540SC, by the way.... Help me out! Thanks!

not exactly sure what preamp is - i think i remember someone saying its like an amp that plays directly out of your guitar (and crappily i might add) - the built in tuner is incredibly useful. new ovations and some others have them, and theyre really cool.

LOL shane no, that's not what a preamp is. A preamp basically gives a boost to the signal (often giving you treble/mid/bass controls) of the pickup of the guitar.

A preamp essentially boosts the output of the piezo pickup (or whatever the case may be) and allows you to cut or boost certain ranges of the output. That's what the Bass, Mid, and Treble sliders or knobs are on the preamp. A built in chromatic tuner is nice, in the fact that you can just push a button on the guitar and use the little panel on the side to tune your guitar. It will have little LED's with corresponding notes underneath them, allowing you to play a whole show without having to rely on a rack tuner or a pedal tuner. If you are serious about playing, though, I'd recommend the Korg DTR series rack tuners. I use one onstage, and it's awesome. Really accurate too.

Hell, you can't even tell it's there. Dave uses 'em. Another tuner to look into is the Boss pedal tuner. It's a great alternative to the DTR if you can't afford it.
