Is $5000 too much for a custom guitar?

The one i want is the Abyss J2 Archtop. It's at http://www.abyssguitars.com, in the archtop section. The only thing I worry about, with spending that kind of money, is the fact that I may never be good enough for this guitar. I'm trying pretty damn hard to get better as a lead guitarist, and I've only been doing lead stuff for about 3 months now, but at this point, I feel very hopeless, that I won't ever be able to attain that "thing" that makes some guitarists sooo great. The flip side of this is that I've played upwards of 85 different electric gutiars at various guitar shops, and can't find the sound (or look, for that matter), that I want.

Hmmmmm...

Do you have $5000 of disposable income? If you do than I don't see anything wrong with it other than you becoming a poser.

I'm not sure what your skill level is but there are a lot of amazing guitarists that spend a fraction of that. If dropping 5k is a financial blow than I don't think you have the right to be so selective. Why not spend 2k and become a better guitarist before spending that kind of money.

If you have that kind of money to spend on a guitar then get it. I absolutely suck at playing guitar and am certainly not good enough to justify having the one I have but who cares.

that website lists the base price of a custom koa archtop as $6500... that guitar would cost well over 7 grand.

I would only buy something like that if alot of the money you're spending to buy it came from gigging. Because this is definately a "pro" guitar, it's alot higher quality than what alot of famous bands play. But thats just me-

You can also probaby find a luthier in your area that can make something very similar and cheaper.

i spent almost 6 grand on a guitar and ill probably never play out of my bedroom. i say go for it. if you love it who cares what others will think and who cares if you suck at guitar if it makes you happy. the way i look at it, if you arent married with kids and dont have to feed a family or put kids through college and you can afford it go for it. i did it. im in college (actually just graduated) and i couldnt be happier with my purchase.

They may be wonderful guitars, but if you bought that Abyss chances are you'd never get your money back out of it. If you were to go with a Gib or PRS, you could still sell the guitar and get a good chunk of your money back.
With 5K, this is far more important than you think. I went through five Taylors before I found that "Perfect Sound" and still want to pursue it further. Being able to sell them for what I paid for them was a huge factor in that.

If I trusted a no-name luthier that much I'd name my first kid after him and then marry his sister. There are lots of "Hand Built, One at a time" guitars around, especially in electrics. You could easily build one yourself.

the problem is. any koa hollowbody is gonna be big big bucks. maybe not 6 grand but i bet it will be close

I know, whats the deal with that? the highest quality Koa only costs the maker about $200 more than indian rosewood, but some makers charge about $1000 more for that stuff. There are alot of other really cool woods that you might want to look at.
