Just make sure that your fretting hand lays over the strings so that they are muted. In this case the pointer finger on the 8 should lay across the d-string to mute it.

Yeah, just touching the string should mute it. So use your index finger that's holding down the 8 and angle it down a little to touch the string below. -Mike

i want to know how someone could do that chord with out muting it (not that you'd want to). that's the harder of the two.

i have a similar..sort of reverse problem. when i play that chord further down on the neck, like the 31x3xx chord in the Stone, i end up muting the A string accidentall with my ring finger, the one fretting the 3 on the E string, and i end up with a chord that is 3xx3xx.

is there any way to fix that?

I don't wanna sound redundant, but yeah I know how to solve your problem, practice, practice, practice. I had the same problemo and after a while, you figure out how to position your fingers slightly different than just sloppin them down on the 10 8 x 10 chord for example.

one way to do that is to give a very slight bend of the A string, towards the D string, just enough so that it is out of the way of the third finger
