Stone picking question

In an older thread someone said that Dave plays it like this:

My question is, when it's repeated, is the first 5 still a downstroke? It seems like an upstroke would make more sense. Actually, it seems like the first 3 would make more sense as an upstroke, too. Does it matter?

Also, how do you post tab in that seperate box so everything lines up?

I play it just like you have it tabbed, I guess you could do it the way you described too, its really not that big of a deal.

and i think it is more important to get the notes in the right place than to bother with whether it is an upstroke or a downstroke. playing it technically the exact same way isn't nearly as important as playing it so it sounds right. that should be your goal. the sound, not the technique.

Speaking of sound, I can't get the chorus to sound right. There are 4 chords in the chorus. The first two chords are just two strings, 3 & 4, and it just doesn't sound right to me. Doesn't sound full enough w/o any bass. Am I missing something here? Thanks. -Mike

if you listen to a solo version of the song it does sound like it is missing something too. that's just the song. add in the band and even the orchestra and that kinda makes up for it. the chorus is kinda the quiet part of the song. the softer side. oh i love this song.

nope, yer not missing a thing...that 's how its played...he adds the bass notes to the same chords on the next two chords. remember to mute all the other strings and play most of them too...that adds a lot of sound to it

JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW HE DOESN'T PICK THOSE NOTES LIKE YOUR TOPIC SAID HE MUTES AND STRUMS 3 OR 2 STRINGS AT A TIME. YOU SHOULD WATCH DAVE PLAY STONE.

Is your keyboard stuck on caps lock? Anyways, We know he's got that crazy strum/pick style thing but its hard as hell to do and until you learn it you gotta make due and pick the song.

YES I THINK MY CAPS LOCK IS STUCK WAIT NO yes I just fixed it. Iam only saying this because I learned alot of daves songs Ants Marching, OSW
and Stone picking in parts i should have been strum/picking and the muting my man is the key.

I am aware, I got the muting down very good I really havent got the strum/pick thing though. I can play the majority of his songs now on guitar and I wanna learn how to do the strum/pick thing but I dont really know how to start at it. It seems very complicated, any help?

Stone is still a work in progres for me. I know he mutes the top E string with his 3rd finger and with his 4th finger holds down the A string on the fourth fret and mutes the D string below then he holds down the G string with his 1st finger while muting every thing below it B/e. With me so far? Then he holds down the D string with his 2nd finger while his is 1st finger is on the Dstring now and mutes all strings below. (this is the 3 5 5 2 3 2 part) This style of strum/picking is hard to learn. and causes alot of frustration. play around with it moving slow at first then speed up as your fingers allow you.

Sorry I left out the pick strum part its like playing blues scales in that you are only hitting two or three strings with each strum (with blues scales you are only hitting two but muting nothing.) your hand stays in one spot while the wrist does the up and down. it's called pick strumming because you only hear one note at a time but you are strumming two or three string each time. the better you get at this style of play the closer you are to playing like dave.

dave doesnt always mute.. sometimes he strums and hits only the string he wants to.. which he does in the stone, at least on the charlie rose show. (i think)

Shane Dave does sometimes pick. But I have noticed that alot of people think he is picking cause you can only hear one note and see his left hand holding down only that note so he must have picked one string with that quick strum of the right hand. but infact he mutes with laying fingers across part of the strings if not all the stringsa at times. He does look like he picks stone but after alot of looking at both hands and slowing down the video I realized he is hitting more than one string.

i wonder if there will ever be a day when people wont wonder whether dave strums or picks on this song
