I can't pick just 5 so...

Tim Reynolds-He can do everything. Shredding, rhythm, improv, fingerpicking, everything.
Eric Clapton-Amazing style, soloing like no other, and still getting better at nearly 60.
Jimi Hendrix-Guitar pioneer, nice style.
Tommy Emmanuel-Fingerpicks like nobody else, and can improvise. Listen to any of his stuff and you'll be amazed.
Dave Matthews-I know, I know, he's not that good. I just really like his writing and rhythm style.
George Harrison-Not afraid of the "naughty" chords, extremely influential.
Wes Montgomery-Great jazz guitarist, brought influences of trumpet to guitar.
John Frusciante-Unique compositional skills, good soloing.
Clapton is God

This actually is in order:

1.Phil Keaggy- say him in concert once stopped to check his watch without missing a beat on a killer fast guitar solo.Arguably the best guitarist who ever lived!
2.Dave Matthews-Some Devil promo, I caught the last two songs of an acoustic performance on tv and was hooked since then
3.Tim Reynolds-Luthur College, awesome solos and stuff. Mesmerizing.
4.John Mayer-awesome sounding
5.Jimi Hendrix-left handed dude with the screwy way of playing guitar.Sounded awesome!

Great...another topic that no one will EVER be able to agree on...

My favorites in no particular order, because each is great for his own reasons:

1. Tim Reynolds (I lied, Tim will always be my favorite guitarist. The other 4 are in no particular order.)
2. Kirk Hammett
3. Kerry King
4. Dave Matthews
5. SRV

If we're throwing bass players in, the late, great Bobby Sheehan would be in there as well.

Im guessing you have never heard of Phil Keaggy. Though he isnt very poplular today he was very popular in the 70s. Hes mostly known for being in Glass Harp. He play carneggy hall once.He is an awesome guitarist you should check him out.
