X - does this equal muted string?

hey, on a lot of the chords on the tablatures on this site...there are strings that have an x on them...usually this means muted string but in the lessons, there is not mention of the muted string....do i play this open or do i mute the string with the x on it...?

so i would mut the D on the first chord but with what finger?

with your index finger (the one playing the 2 on the A-string) you just let your finger fret the note its supposed to, then just lay down so that it touches the d-string. Does that make sense? If not Ill expand but that should explain it, thats how a lot of daves mutes are done, by just letting a finger rest on other strings while fretting a different one

Just lay your index (i think i can't remember the tab) over it while playing the 2 A string if that makes sense
