ants marching

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

ants marching

Post by ecs787s »

Could someone with video equipment make a video of ants marching, with close ups of the fingers and then of the strumming. Maybe just in slow speed. I am just having a difficult time with the muting, cause i know that dave isn't really picking the strings. His strumming hand is just flying everywhere. So it would be greatly appreciated.

its very easy, possibly one of his easiest. play the D chord, play the A4 with finger 2 and slide to A5, then play D4 with finger 1, (play the note after that, no fingering needed if you do it right) then play G chord, then play the A4 with finger 1 and slide to A5, and then play the D5 with finger 2 and then slide to D7. (just in case you didnt notice, i was using the string and then the fret for the A4 and crap like that.) it sounds confusing like this, but take it step by step. youll get it soon enough.

He actually does quite a bit of muting/slaps during ants, at least when he's not with the band. You should be half-strumming the slides, not just picking them, and he throws in a slap after each d and g chord strum. Download storytellers from kazza or something, and you'll see. Just keep practicing, thats what it takes.

PLEASE DON'T TELL PEOPLE THERE'S NO MUTING IN A DAVE SONG!

thank you.

(especially Ants!-----you listen closely to ST and you'll ONLY hear those notes of the riff, as if they were picked, but we all know they're not. Dave DOES strum his fI^%ing ass off and also mute his f(^%ing ass off so it sounds like that)

but shane i'll cut you some slack cause i've read a whole other bunch of yer' posts and you know what ur talking about.. usually

peace

always good to be cut some slack :) - looked at the ants tab on here after i got a reply to that post, guess ill have to get ants on ST to see how he strums.
edit by the way, when i said whatever i said about no muting, i was thinking that there were no only muting strums. i didnt mean no muting in say the all the little ants part. just wanted to make this clear. i was still wrong anyway though

Here's my post from a while ago on this subject:

For ants I just play the D chord first, then lay my pointer finger across the neck at the fourth fret and do 3 muted strums then I just hold down that finger at the fourth fret and make sure to hold down the a and d string and just use my middle finger to hammer on the 5th fret and youve already got your first finger layed across for the d string part. Then I just slide my hand down and play a g with my pointer and middle finger without holding the high e string down. Then I just go back up to the 4th fret with my pointer finger layed across and this time when I hammer on the 5th fret I lay my middle finger across the a and d string to play the second part then I just slide from 5 ot 7 the second time I play it. I know Ants is supposed to be played with slides but I think it sounds just as good with hammers and its a lot easier that way, give it a try tell me what you think.

Here's the link if you wanna see the whole thing http://www.dmbtabs.com/boards/viewtopic ... highlight=

I think that way sounds just about as good, I can play it the "right" way now but if your having problems you'll probably be able to play it this way a lot easier.

I think that alot of people think dave plays the A string 4th fret slide to 5th fret and D string 4th fret by picking each string. He infact strums this part holding down the A and D strings with his 1st and 2nd finger muting in front of these fingers with his 3rd finger. Hope I didn't lose any one. the verse in one sweet world, the intor to Stone, and warehouse are played in the same style.

Very true. He strums his ass off man. I have watched Listener Supported DVD, Folsom DVD, all VHI storytellers, all other various video too, hundreds of times. He does not pick anything! At best he does this "dave pick-strum" like on the stone and WWYS and satellite. It involves muting almost all the time and also half-strums or partial strums. For One Sweet World I use partial strums the whole time and just "pick" strum the notes. It takes some practice. AS for ANTS, i just strum almost full cause there is enough muting if you play with your hand really low that you won't hit anything but the notes you fret.
