The actual riff of Jimi thing is exactly that, a tribute to Hendrix. The lyrics themselves are about the positive effects of drugs, but the actual song was called jimi thing because it was a hendrix-esque riff.
The guitar riff wasnt written by dave to sound like or be a tribute to Jimi at all, it was just a coincidence. It didnt have a name and Carter wanted Dave to play it one day and said, "Hey dave, play that jimi thing" because he thought it sounded like a hendrix song. As for what the lyrics are about, Ive heard a few differnet explanations from Dave in recordings I have.

And all I would like to say on this topic is, what Hendrix was able to do in his shortlived career was amazing. Clapton and others who deserve to be in the same sentence as Hendrix, such as Page, etc, have had 30+ years, Hendrix wasnt so lucky. And I doubt that 30 years from now, we would even faintly remember who Dave is, but people would still know Hendrix. Thats what defines a great guitarist; timeless. His stuff is just as good today as it was during the 70's, and people are still holding comparisons today between him and other guitarists. Not very many people have changed music and done so much in so little time.

And Dave makes Hendrix look like Delonge?!?! PLEASE!

And I will give SRV due credit that he made some Hendrix tunes better, such as VOodoo Chile and Little Wing. But I dont know about you guys, but I give more credit to the original inventor of the songs than to one who can go on that basic structure and just make it better. Sure, SRV surpasses Hendrix in technical ability (Hendrix wasnt really that technically proficient, he did too many drugs). But he didnt change rock like Hendrix.

IF its called Jimi Thing because it sounds (or CArter thought it sounded) like a Hendrix riff, then couldnt you consider the riff a tribute to Hendrix? I wasnt saying Dave wrote to honor Hendrix, but in that it was a riff that sounded like Hendrix and was called Jimi Thing, isnt that some sort of a tribute?

Story I heard was that Dave just started playing it on and off. Just came up with it out of the blue. And one day Carter said something like, Hey Dave play that one thing, "play the Jimi Thing," because Carter thought it sounded like something Jimi Hendrix would play. Wether Dave meant it to be that way has yet to be proven to me.

Edit: Just noticed that this was already said, ignore me.

of course hendrix is still remembered today; he was the greatest guitarist of HIS time. during his legacy no other guitarist could even compare to him. now there are hundreds of amazing guitarist, and it's probably going to be difficult to remember all of them, eh?

now for kurt cobain, rest his soul. like someone said, the man was a songwriter, not a guitarist. how could we even bring him into this topic when clapton and halen are present? i mean, i can't say he is overrated because i never viewed him as being good but sheesh, c'mon people. he's just another simple "rock" guitarist of our time addicted to those catchy power chord riffs.

i'm not severely addicted to dave or anything, but whoever said he was overrated needs to think twice considering he probably left you up for hours trying to learn his catchy slides and rhythmical mutes. we have to remember who we're talking about here.

Thats true but Tim is the real deal. If you listen to HIS music(the brilliant fingerstyle stuff not the weird experimental shit) you would not be so quick to call him overated. He's also going to have a lot of fans on a DMB message board but in the general landscape of music he's not very well known, yet another reason why he isn't overrated.
That being said I think Santana. There was a time when he felt his music but that time passed long ago. Now he gets hip vocalists/songwriters to guest on his albums and all he contributes is a lick inbetween each verse.

I have a serious problem with this. Cobains riffs don't even touch Daves in difficulty. Not to mention on Unplugged he had Pat Smear backing him up the whole time. This bugs me in particular cause I think Nirvana was overrated in general. Pearl Jam was/is far better.
