Those stupid Pantala fingerings...

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Those stupid Pantala fingerings...

Post by billywestom »

Can anyone give a reason why Dave uses such strange fingerings for those last chords of Pantala/WWBOM? Ok, he has his own style...whatever...but I think any smart person would realize the more convienent way to play it...I really am curious if someone has an idea... :?

Which ones are you talking about specifically?

i'm guessing one of them is that stupid chord before the Em where he has his hand on backwards or something...

I play the low E there with my thumb and just make a regular C chord, its much easier.

Code: Select all

e--3--3--2--3--3--
b--3--2--3--3--3--
g--------2--2--0--
d--2--2--0--0--0--
a--2--0-----------
e-----------3--3--

heres what i came up with, it sounds really close, and its not that difficult to play either, just a few minor chord changes, hand stays basically in the same position

Ok you can tackle this song (and subsequently WWBOM) a couple of ways. The first is to do it like this site has more or less accurately tabbed:

E-----------------------0----3----3---------------3--
B-8----8----7----3----0----3----3----2----3----3--
G-x----x----x----x----x----x----2----2----2----0--
D-5----x----4----4----2----2----2----2----x----0--
A-7----7----5----5----2----2---------------x----2--
E-------5---------3--------------------------2----3--

You can actually break this down into two parts:

E----------------------- E-0----3----3---------------3--
B-8----8----7----3---- B-0----3----3----2----3----3--
G-x----x----x----x---- G-x----x----2----2----2----0--
D-5----x----4----4---- D-2----2----2----2----x----0--
A-7----7----5----5---- A-2----2---------------x----2--
E-------5---------3---- E-----------------------2----3--

Musically, both parts are the EXACT same chord progression but just different voicings. SO if the first part is too difficult then you can just use the seconds part for the same effect.

Just remember that the first two chords in the second part each get half the measure so it's all played in the same time.

And, FYI, --2-2-3-3 is actually an Em7.

Oh, psh, use whatever fingerings you want. I'm a firm believer in doing whatever is the most comfortable for you.

I know like for Satellite I use my index, ring, and pink instead of index, middle, and pinky like Dave. Too me it is just easier that way.

Yeah, when my fingers were still virgins it was too hard of a stretch so I improvised. Now that they're all good and stretched out, it just feels natural that way I've been doing it. Anytime I play a DMB song with one of those 5-fret riff/chord spans I use the same index, ring, pinky setup.

I know...I'm also weird.

And I'm procrastinating....damn school projects.

i usually just play pantala naga pampa the same way as i play wwbom, but ofcoure there are different ways of playing the song..i.e. the 075087 way or the 02233 way. i'm pretty sure he uses both(listen to any d&t version of jimi thing). its the same song isn't it? ofcourse there's gonna be two different ways to play it, isn't there for every song?

i love playing dave chords cuz when theres someone who has never ever seen them before and you bust them out like nothing, they are mega impressed. i have a friend who writes some pretty awesome stuff and plays all the time but when i played w/ him once, his eyes lit up seeing the strange shapes and stretches. i think playing all over the place (neck wise) really frees you up and allows you to really come up w/ crazy stuff. good times.
